Yup. Don't have a date yet, but according to a good friend of mine - who just happens to be Montreal's chief mechanic for AirFrance - the 380 will make a quick stop in YUL this fall.

Cool airplane from an airplane perspective. No interest in the boarding and deplaning experience with 600 others and the subsequent line at customs.

If Air France is planning to use that on schedule flights, I could see why the airport would be in a rush to get rid of the old cargo buildings to open up the ramp a bit more... they are going to need to space!

there has to be some reasoning for their expansion and their new "double decking loading ramps" ... but cargo , thats odd

Masta-fred, the airport authority is getting rid of all the old cargo buildings (like where air canada cargo is right now) pushing that side of the ramp all the way just about to the Aeroterm buildings, and up against the small golf course. Apparently the redo of the original sets of international gates will extend that jetty out quite a bit further. The cargo companies are all being relocated to new facilities on the other side of 24R, where the large golf course (half of it is getting turned into cargo area).

I am guessing the A380 will need a fancy double decker gate to handle it properly.

Gate 55 has been A380 ready for about two years now. The cargo buildings (Innotech, AC, Hydro, etc...) are moving on the north side of 24R. To make room for extra gates...

CDG-YUL will be the first A380 route to Canada. This will be part of the three daily flights to YUL for AF.
There have been talks about a fourth daily flight though?

This route is huge in summer times!

3X daily AF (773,744,A343)
1X daily AC (773)
1X daily TS (A333)
1X daily Corsair (A332 and 744 on 7)
4X weekly Zoom (763, 3,5,6,7)

Too bad that I will be moved by next spring, otherwise they pass right in front of my windows on the way in (I am 1nm north of the approach for 24R, about 1.5 miles back). I would be seeing those huge things go by every day.

Wait. Yeah... I better get selling soon! :)

Hello,

Does anyone have times for the 380's arrivals and departures?
Which runway should we expect it to use? (I'm guessing 24R/06L?)
A friend of mine would also like to know some good spotting locations, any suggestions? (Or links to some spotting websites with same.)

Thanks in advance,

Louis

Considering that the local french media has been going nutty on this (including that they have one of their reporters "embedded" on the flight into Montreal) I am expecting nothing short of a three ring circus with two missing rings.

That said, if it is 24R, there will be plenty of decent flyover viewing in St Laurent, along Poirer just before the 40 (about 1/2 mile before the runway) or on the little dead end just next to the 13, but I expect this area to be packed.

You can also look along Chemin St Francis, which runs along the north side of 24R, however the only vibility areas will likely be after the plane has touched down.

The road leading to the fire / rescue for Dorval would be good, across from Bombardier, but it is a no parking zone that potentially would be enforced solidly. I am expecting most of the major media trucks to be there, as it will give a nice solid side view of the plane landing.

Depending on your desire, there are a number of trucking companies that back onto the north side of 24R. They may or may not be happy to have you there.

As a side note to all this, one of the Dorval VFR controllers (Mr Bolduc, if I remember the name correctly) is retiring, the last plane under his control apparently will be the A380.

Does anyone have a specific time on this one? Last I heard was 12:45, but that wasn't confirmed... anyone?

I saw a lot of 1230 and i'm pretty sure 1245 is a gate time. Not confirmed though.

This is turning into a media circus. TVA / LCN will be running a live special starting at 12:15 with their helicopter chasing the plane in.

Joy.

Haha, awesome we'll get to first hand the A380's superb wake turbulence and it's effect on rotary aircraft! Seriously though I don't know why they are freaking out about it!

A little side note: on that other YUl board, I noticed people suggesting the area between autoroute 13 and the airport (grassy area) as a great place to see the plane. My understanding from past exerience with the SQ is that they consider that area part of the autoroute, and they will normally remove anyone that gets into that area.

Enjoy... :)

A quick pass around the standard viewing areas for 24r shows a large-ish crowd 2.5 hours before arrival.
