Holy crap. I guess it depends how many amps you want, and for how many days ...

When I wanted 28VDC I just got a handcart (dolly) from Crappy Tire, welded another tray on it and installed two big 12VDC lead acid batteries on it. Wired them in series, got a connector from Spruce and ta da, a 28VDC battery cart. Works just fine on the C421 - starts it great.

Another friend of mine, had a late model 172 that was 28V and someone was quoting him hundreds of dollars for a 28V battery charger.

So, I had him go to Canadian Tire and buy two cheap constant-current 1 amp 14VDC trickle chargers. Wired them up in series and presto he's cheapo 28VDC trickle charger.

Back to your $30,000 appliances ...

I agree, your set-up is great if you are simply using it for you and your freinds but if you are running an FBO and the paying customer rolls up in a Herc they expect a little more than than bailing wire and duct tape.

This may sound a bit nuts but I assure you it works well!

You should have a look at taking a newer electric forklift or pallet truck and just connecting directly from the huge battery and should be able to handle just about any load that you can throw at it. We use them all the time on T28's and any light to mid size turboprop (be 90 - 1900 etc.) for both starting as well as towing.

we've got one converted with a bucket within the forks and a winch attached to the backing plate. The T28 weighs approx 8000lbs, even the smallest pallet truck from these guys below, it works well both as a tug and as a GPU unit

Plus then you have a forklift for whatever you may need.

Or you can go to a tug/GPU company like Lektro and just buy directly from them. Same capabilities but cost at least 5x more.

be cautious to what size of unit you need. 24 or 28 VDC. if you need 28VDC then 2 x 12 V batteries won't cut it.

Most aircraft require a regulated input or they will not connect to the aircraft electrical system. Most aircraft I see using a GPU do so for about 30 minutes, not just to crank an engine. Go for a purpose built unit if the budget allows...unless you also stock the shelves at Home Depot.
