Bombardier Signs with Air Canada for up to 90 CRJs
Bombardier Signs with Air Canada for up to 90 CRJ Regional Jets
Toronto, September 27, 2004
Bombardier Aerospace announced today that it has signed a contract with Air Canada for the sale of up to 90 Bombardier CRJ aircraft, as follows:
·45 orders of which 30 are firm orders (15 Bombardier CRJ700 Series 705 and 15 Bombardier CRJ200) and fifteen conditional orders (Bombardier CRJ200);
·45 options.
Air Canada has ordered the Bombardier CRJ regional jets for its wholly owned regional airline, Air Canada Jazz. The contract is contingent upon Air Canada’s emergence from bankruptcy protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).
This contract has a potential value of approximately $2.45 billion US. The firm order portion of the agreement has a value of approximately $821.2 million US.
Deliveries of the CRJ200 model are scheduled to commence in 2004, with deliveries of the CRJ700 Series 705 model commencing in 2005.

Horray!!!
Isn't that just a rehash of the announcement from last winter? They ordered 90 CRJ's from Bombardier and 90 from Embraer. And there are only 30 firm orders from each company, the rest being options.
All the press releases seem to try to focus on the 90 and minimize the fact that most are options.
I read a big report in The Globe and Mail about a month ago that said that AC is planning to reduce their total number of aircraft (in their whole fleet - Jazz included) from around 220 to under 190. That includes the new orders. Reading between the lines, it sounds like they are getting rid of larger aircraft, like the 767 (more expensive leases), and bringing in smaller aircraft.
Bottom line: no new flight crew positions at AC for a while yet.

Correction to your Numbers
Nomad - AC has a fleet of over 300 with Jazz included (I'm not sure of the size at this moment (after Zip was brought back into mainline), but those figures you read at AC are without Jazz included).
The focus is on long haul at AC. Friends that work there have said lots of rumours, but looking to modify fleet plan as they try to get more widebodies for Intl. Expansion.
Deskgo, the ERJ's are still coming, starting next year. Looks like a nice aircraft (IMO, much better than the CRJ - when AC was inviting investors, employees, mgmt, and high status aeroplan members to look at the 717, CRJ, A318, and EMB 170 - apparently, the A318 and EMB got the highest marks - CRJ the lowest.)
Now AC getting the 7E7 would definitely be cool.

In a world full of people, only some want to fly. Isn't that crazy?
