East Timor and Liberia

Post by xsbank »

I saw on the jobs site that VAL is looking for crew for these places - anybody been there? Are you likely to get shot or blown up if you go there? I'm curious to hear if anybody out there has been to these places, more out of interest than the overwhelming desire to inflict myself on Low Wageur. I understand from the website that the only reason for East Timor to exist is it shares oil and gas fields with Australia. What about Liberia? I know that if you go to the Sudan you should give teddy bears a wide berth, what about Congo?

I'll look at PPrune, but I'd rather hear it from you lot.

East Timor from my understanding is fairly stable, compared to Liberia. You want to avoid Liberia. East Timor has plenty of Aussie and Kiwi troops, and there is a central government that has some power.

If you do decide to work there, remember to lay low, stay in highly secure locations, do not show signs of affluence, do not travel alone, and stay close or in the capital. In East Timor, your best point of contact if trouble brews up is the local Australian Embassy. In Liberia, your nearest safe embassy is the Canadian Embassy in nearby Côte d'Ivoire.

Liberia is very much changed from the days of Charles Taylor, but as mentioned above, it remains somewhat unstable. These countries are fairly easy to work in however, and at the earliest sign of trouble, one can always hop in one's own airplane and head for safer locales.

Having said that, the chances of any major uprising transpiring in Liberia in the next few years is unlikely. Charles Taylor was the main destabilizer of that region until he left...arguably the cause of the "civil" war in neighbouring Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is quite stable now, after the election of a new government, hopefully less corrupt that Kabal's first post war government.

I think the wild card in coastal west africa at the moment is Guinea. Trouble is brewing there, and who knows when it will explode. Liberia should stay out of this though, although the spillover of refugees would cause some havoc. Cote d'Ivoire tends to keep it's strife inside its borders.

I am presently working in Liberia and have had the pleasure to work in East Timor, sorry to say I am payed very well . Voyageur is one of the best places to work for. My opinion from doing several overseas ops. Voyageur does it right.

Since there isn't a hangar big enough at Spriggs, where is the maintanance done? Outside in the T-Storms? Or ferried over to Roberts?

Curious to know where they house the guys in Monrovia?

Cheers,

K

you guys are bringing back great memories.
I lived in Conakry (Guinea) and flew to Sierra Leone, Liberia(GLMR,GLTN, GLCP) as well as DIAP.
Mind you this was back in 99-00, before the civil unrest that is affecting these countries now.
One of the most rewarding experiences i've had.
Cheers

There is a hangar big enough for the Dash (and bigger.....). Unfortunately it takes about an hour (less if you speed and avoid the potholes) to get to the main airport. Unless VOy. has a accomodations in the bush....

The Dash is based in Spriggs, we live in Sincor close to Spriggs, on the ocean, new pool, tennis courts, in my estimation the best accomodation in Monrovia, new vehicles, full time driver, 4 on 2 off 10 plus a month

Does Trans Capital Air still operate DHC-7s in these places and the Ivory Coast or has Voyageur replaced TCA on the UN contracts there?
