SARON

Post by xqs-me »

Has anybody written the SARON lately?
I'm using the Aerocourse workbook. I keep hearing that the exams are pretty different now and that the people have been founding a lot of surprises.
Can you remember any of the questions? PM me please..thanx

I agree; the version that I received for the SARON was quite a bit different than the Aerocourse workbook, however there was still much in common. I would still recommend the aerocourse (especially for the SAMRA), but be sure to back it up by going through the study and reference guide on the TC website.

Sorry, I don't remember specific questions.

Good luck! As long as you've put in a bit of time preparing, you will have no difficulty.

Study CARs part 6 & 7 and do all the aerocourse questions and you'll be fine.

Ah, the evil SARON Image

in series 6 there are questions like " What defines a heavy aircraft" (5700KG)
questions about CVR and FDR requirements in two pilot turbojet aircraft manufactured after about 1991
Pitot-static blockage question with some tricky answers
advantage of stormscope with tricky answers with it coming down to 2, one saying something like it has no errors as range increases or it can see behind mountains
VASIS and eye to wheel height questions regarding which bars you would use - not an easy question unless you know it really well because of the wording (they use downwind bars and some other term I've never seen to describe the upwind bars)
ADIZ rules for penetration +/- so many minutes and miles
regulations on take-offs and landings in a built up area
know if a maintenance release is required if you have to replace a battery and whether or not you can do it or if an AME has to
a few tricky V1 and V2 questions - V2 correct answer was like "the speed which the aircraft must accelerate to before a climb is initiated after an engine failure"
a question about pilot qualification for single engine IFR at night
recency questions 5 in 6 rule and then the 3 in 90
VFR fuel question (to destination plus 30min)
holding speed limit for turbojet above 14K (answer was slow to 265 BEFORE hold entry)
seat belt question - answer was a flight crew member shall remain at their station with seatbelt fastened - no mention of the 10 000ft, other answers were "passengers must have their belt on for takeoff and landing ONLY"
CVR question about when it has to be on, something like "continuously from the time electrical power is supplied to the unit before flight until electrical power is shut off at the end of the flight"
MEL question
Altitude alerter question, choose from list "when can you fly with the altitude alerter U/S?" list was like "when flying cargo, positioning with no pax, on a PPC flight, on a maintenance flight to check it" and a few other answers, maintenance flight was one of the correct from the list
life preserver question (how far from shore:50NM)
movement area question
transponder code question (2000 mode C)
Arctic Control area boundary question
specific ground range question
time to CP question - make sure to use the full groundspeed out to get this time once you have computer the distance to CP using the formula!
CYA alert area question (can fly through it but discouraged when in use)
altimeter setting question about changing from standard to altimeter setting
speed limit question
123.2 ATF question
wake turbulence question
special VFR question ("must have 1 NM flight vis, and when reported ground vis")
plenty of performance chart questions
weight and balance computation
turbofan questions ("in a turbofan all or part of the air bypasses the compressor section and is mixed with exhaust gases" something like that)
bleed air question something like q." why is air bled from the middle of the compressor section in a turbine engine?" a. to prevent compressor stall i.e. to compensate for the varying efficiency at low speeds between the compressors, you know like the bleed for the difference in the centrifugal and axial compressor in a PT-6
how is reverse thrust accomplished in a TURBOJET engine? answer was something like exhaust is directed forward at the rear end
low pitch stop question for turboprop
what do power levers do in beta? controls blade angle
what is a NEGATIVE pressure relief valve for? to make sure atmospheric pressure does not exceed cabin pressure
antiskid question "antiskid releases the brakes if the wheel decelerates too quickly"
weight shift question
mach meter question
VFR into bad wx question same as 159 page 6-42 aerocourse
black hole question "causes your approach to be too low"
local anesthetic (24 hrs) they say LOCAL anesthetic after MAJOR oral surgery or something similar
time of useful consciousness at 40 000ft 15-32 seconds I believe was the correct answer

So picking "c" or whichever answer is longer doesn't work anymore?

this may belong in the "aerocourse??" thread, but i have a few questions. first off, i have a date with the samra and the saron in the next month, however no aerocouurse dates coincide with my vacation time nor my location. so just a few questions...

-is there anything u will learn at the aerocourse that is not in the aerocourse book. i have a current copy of the aerocourse manual (150 or so page "study notes to accompany the aerocouurse ATPL workbook....), so if i were to know this cover to cover, networking and bullshiting aside, is there any point in taking the course? I also intend on performing all of aerocourse's practice questions a few times through.

-how much of what is fair game for TC to quiz me on is covered by aerocourse? I might add that I have an AC Wx manual, and intend to know her intimately by then, but are there possible elements to each test that aerocourse doesn't cover. I've had a look at the study guide on TC's website, and it seems very broad. Albeit a CYA approach for TC, I don't have the time, patience or mental capacity to know all these pubs. (know, not read) So is knowing those two soft cover Human Factors books necessary, or over the top?

-wizz wheel/CR3. good idea to sharpen up on this, or is a battery opperated E6B the way to go? still have my CR and manual, and never used the E6. either one of them nesessary or helpful to those who have written?

-and finally, how do we feel about writing both these tests in one day, back to back? success stories or regret? i'm a pretty average guy.

thanks looproll (already)
and thanks in advace to the others.

First they are pretty easy exams you don't need to get stressed out over them. I wrote both in one day and had no problems.

I did the Aero Course and after attending you could go out and write first thing and pass without studying, Note I said pass. Aero Course goes through the workbook and eliminates questions they know aren't on the exam so it saves you having to go through 50% of the questions.

There wasn't a single question on a topic they didn't go over and some were almost word for word. Unfortunitly most of the questions were worded in such a way you really had to know the subject they seemed to take great joy in testing your reading comprehension/underlining understanding.

Is the AeroCourse worth it, Yes, if you are like me and hate studying. If you can sit down with the work/note Book and understand the topics in the questions you will pass without taking the course, but it might take you weeks were as the course is just three days, because they weed out the useless.

Good Luck
