Done the SAMRA lately?
Remember any of the questions you got on the SAMRA?..please tell..
thanks!!!
thanks!!!
Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
When I was doing the SAMRA (and SARON) I had extreme deja vu because I had done the Aerocourse practice questions in the preceeding days. I know I say this a lot, but most of the questions will be identical to Aerocourse.
And by the way, no I do not work for Aerocourse. Not trying to advertise for them, just trying to help out!

"Yeah. There is a problem. You...because you're dangerous. You're dangerous and foolish - and that makes you dangerous! Now, let's cut the...crap. We've got a plane to fly. Let's try to be on time, okay?"

I agree... study hard core for a month, then pay the $$ and do the crse.

Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
A couple of us wrote it today so I hope this helps some of you out....
-What happens to ADF when beyond range of signal?? Point straight ahead, 90 degrees to the right etc.
-How does GPS compute position?? Triangulating lines of position.
-How does INS compute position?? Integrate acceleration over time.
-Advantage with FMS. Allows entry of complete route of flight.
-What can INS also be used for?? Attitude reference
-How does INS figure out where you are?? Something about accelerometers
-Flight plans from Canada to the US. Not considered international for flight planning
-Intermediate stops IFR. Require seperate flight plans.
-On GFA given a point find FZLV. Was surface.
-How long is an IFR outlook valid for? 12 hours.
-How many clouds and weather and icing and turb charts are issued at a time?? 3,3
-About 10 metar/taf questions find lowest ceiling, lowest vis, cloud coverage, winds at a certain time etc.
-Given a sigmet, what was it issued for?? Answer was "due to severe icing".
-A NOTAM with APPROX. Requires a cancelling or replacing NOTAM.
-Given millibars. Find the altitude.
-What does SLP892 mean??
-Given a temperature at an altitude. Find ISA +/-
-You encounter -SN then PL, whats next? FZRA
-Cloud formation at a cold front is due to?? Expansion from frontal lift.
-Base of convective cloud is dependent on?? Temp/dew point spread.
- What determines how much moisture air can hold?? Temperature.
-If you raise the temperature without changing the moisture content what happens?? Change in relative humidity.
-What do you need to fly a stand alone GPS approach?? RAIM
-1 or 2 more questions on RAIM
-How does a VOR determine position?? Phase difference between 2 signals.
-How does TCAS work?? Interrogates other transponders.
-PSR/SSR question. Answer was SSR requires a transponder and cant see wx.
-Mode C Transponder. Gives ATC pressure altitude.
-Where does mode C get altitude information from?? Encoded altimeter.
-Given a position on a map, find pressure. 4mb spacing.
-Given a position on a map, find wind direction.
-Overrunning air at a warm front. Clouds form from adiabatic expansion.
-Warm, moist, stable air travelling west over praries what happens?? Upslope fog at rockies.
-Moist stable encounter mechanical turbulence, what kind of clouds?? Stratocumulus.
-Above freezing level but below 30,000 avoid thunderstorm by how much?? 10NM
-Unstable air will give what conditions?? Good vis, showery precipitation, minimal wind change at altitude etc.
-What conditions most favorable to icing?? Answer was between freezing level and -20.
-Hard to detect cells in moderate rain due to?? Attenuation.
-One dot on HSI in RNAV mode gives .5NM off track regardless of distance from waypoint.
-ILS reliable with 35 degrees out to 10NM.
-Width of glideslope from top to bottom?? 1.4 degrees.
-You have a VOR/DME, what can you recieve from a TACAN?? Distance only
-HF frequencies. Use higher in day, lower at night.
-Width of VHF airway. 8NM
-VOR reception distance.
-Height between pressure levelsis less in cold air.
-Jetstreams move south in winter, and lower altitudes.
-Most severe turbulence associated with jetstream. Polar side
-Given FD 3000',6000',9000'. Find wind and direction at 7000'.
-Microbursts can have decent rates up to?? 6000' FPM
-Where do lenticular clouds form?? Over crest of mountain wave.
-Why is volcanic ash dangerous?? Engine ingestion.
-What do surface analysis show?? Actual weather at a specific time.
-A TAF cover weather around an airport to?? 5 miles
-Winds show up on a GFA over what spped?? 20KTS
-How do winds show up on a TAF if they are calm?? 00000KT
-How are station pressures compared to each other?? Reduced to sea level pressure.
-What is an indication of a presence of a downdraft?? VIRGA
-What does a decending parcel of air do?? Compresses because the air around it is more dense.
-After passage of a warm front what kind of fog can be present?? Advection.
-What is true with the condensation process?? Heat is released.
-What is pressure alt?? Put altimeter to 29.92
-What type of cloud forms as a result of evaporation?? Stratus.
-Stationary front, cold air moves?? Parallel to front.
-Mature stage of thunderstorm. Onset of precipitation.
-What type of clouds is drizzle associated with??
-Fast moving cold front with no vertical development, what does this mean?? Warm air low relative humidity.
-What is RERA in a METAR?? Recent heavy rainfall.
-What is VCSH in a METAR?? Showers in the vacinity.
No questions on SIG WX charts or prognostic charts.
Go through the Aerocourse workbook Section 2,3 4-1 to 4-26 a few times and you'll do fine.
Longer than i thought it was going to take....now to celebrate

Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
Took the A-Course, wrote the exam 1 week later. Worth spending the money. Things clarifies more after the course.
Got pretty much the same questions as ~Hollywood~, but quite few questions on Sig Charts and Prog Charts.
Good Luck!!

Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
When I wrote the senior commercial exams, I got good enough marks on the 4 exams to not have to re-write for the ATPL.
I had to know about Decca Nav, Omega, Loran, Astro Compasses, grid nav, Radio Range approaches, and a zillion ADF approaches
Hope this helps.

Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
Well, no one has mentioned it yet so I will.
Thanks for da info Hollywood! Must have taken for ever to type all that stuff out. Cheers!
A bit of topic, but thinking about Astrocompasses makes me horny. I think it's wild how they did things back in the day; cruising around the dark arctic on nothing but a watch, star shots and some horseshoes. Cool.

Re: Done the SAMRA lately?
For those who asked about the SARON:
Study aerocourse workbook, 1, 4-27-, 5 & 6.
Some similar questions from the book.
- Normal max duty time in a period of 24hours (14)
- When is an FDR and CVR required
- Compute Trust Airspeed
- Compute True Altitude
- Effects of ice underneath the wing
- V speeds (definition)
- 5 charts, performance
- Pilot recency (5 take of and landings in 6 months)
- Privileges of ATPL (i.e. once IFR expires, now CPL)
- Compute the critical point
- Compute SAR/SGR
- Define CYA
- reverted rubber hydroplanning, when can it occur?
- pitot/static system blockage (in the climb, A/S drops to zero)
- Lightning detection equipment (advantages)
- Pressurization system components
- com failure in IFR (i.e. flying IFR in VMC, lost com, now what?)
- TORA/TODA
- jet engine reverse thrust
- battery needs to be changed, who can do it, and does it require a maintenance release?
- If an AD is issued by FAA for type of A/C, is it only good in the states? all types across the world? Transport will have to certify it? Transport will automatically issue it?
- decompression sickness
- time of useful consciousness
- boundaries of air spaces
- anaesthetics
- requirements to start a replacing journey log.
That's what I can think of for now.
