Just wondering what other centres take is on collecting $50 from each union member for retirees. Is it a common practice across the country or is this something elective at our centre?

People are retiring from NC with this extra something from the union....?????? Like everything else they get isnt enough....

I personally have an issue with it....

Whats your take?

We were asked at QM ACC & the general reply was to not support that idea.

Most of ours come back to work the next day double-dipping (pension & wage) so I can't imagine that people will chip in $50.

My personal take is that we make a very good wage, and each and every one of us would not miss $50, I think its somewhat a disgrace we do not support our senior members for their service, but thats my opinion.

Seriously, find me an IFR controller who cannot afford $50

If anything some sort of recognition is in order, not just $50, how about buying them a nice jacket etc, good lord it's pretty sad that with the money we make people say they can't afford that.

I dont think its about affording it. When an employee gets caught stealing sandwiches that are made in support of local charities and then is having a retirement party held for them a couple months later, its hard to feel supportive of that, its hard to be supporive of the types of jerks that throw out their dirty dishes in a garbage bag that the cleaners have held out...especially when the cleaners are breaking their backs for a lot lower wages...its hard to want to afford $50 for some people who have been playing cards with their feet on tables for the past 15 years of their career... Retirees get their plaque and severence from the company and best wishes parties if they are liked...some have friends that do something a little more than standard, usually because that retiree deserves it...but a standard for retirement...nope, I dont agree.

...if you dont earn respect, you dont deserve respect....to some, good riddance...to others, we are truly sad to see them go, they will get something from me and others who appreciated and respected their service...

Different rant similiar principal...these ridiculous safety magnets and mini flashlights and birthday cards...take the money and donate it to a local charity or some other worthwhile cause...some things here just blow my mind. Throwing the money away...

While I'm not in the ATC union, I have been in other unions that did something similar.

I support the practice if it is to collect money in order to give someone a nice retirement party or gift. If, on the other hand, it's just to give them a lump sum of cash...this I do no support whatsoever.

I haven't heard of this one.......just what is the money being collected for?

We chip in $20 each, more if you want to, but it is totally optional. It is put into a pot and who or how much they donated is anonymous.

I do fully agree that some people likely don't deserve as much as some of their co-workers.

The fact of the matter is, they are card carrying members from 35+ years for most of them.

I also agree that it should never be cash, perhaps a party, a nice jacket, something of the like.

I still think putting some money together for someone retiring shouldn't really be a debate, we all put far more money into taxes, and as we all know taxes go to the most needy and deserving projects and people...
