Aeronautical engineering jobs in Canada

Post by MalakiasJorma »

Hello everybody,

I noticed this site today and decided to register as this forum seems to be a rather lively one. Actually I was trying to find out what kind of job opportunities there would be in Canada for a fresh-baked aeronautical engineer. However, the internet is so full of stuff, junk even, that I couldn't come up with too many result-providing search lines in google. That's why any answers and comments would be much appreciated. :)

Anyway, the situation is, that I'll get my M.Sc in aeronautical engineering in 2-3 years, but the jobmarket here in Finland is very limited, and Central & Western Europe don't seem to be too tempting places to live in. Presumably the "quality of life"-factor would be pretty high in places like Canada or the US Pacific Northwest, where it's not too crowded(?) and you could also enjoy the great outdoors... What is making me ask these questions, is that from various sources I've gathered that Canada has a rather liberal immigration policy these days, and that salaries are generally pretty good?

So, it would be nice to hear estimates, how many companies there are in Canada that actually do aeronautical design work (completely new aircraft or heavier modifications etc.)? I haven't heard of others than Bombardier, but surely there has to be a whole lot more... It would also be interesting to hear experiences from anybody who's gotten through the immigration process, if there are such persons hanging around.

Kind regards from Helsinki :)

After Bombardier, there are a few outfits out there who do mods, parts, or build accessories for aircraft.

There are a few composite shops in Ontario http://www.raacomposites.com; Diamond Aircraft, if you can get past their HR department; Calamar http://www.clamarfloats.com/; Comtek http://www.comtekadvanced.com/...

There are also a few engine/ turbine shops around... they probably hire engineers for process improvement or part analysis.

Designing totally new aircraft tends to be a rather costly endeavour, hence (as you know) isn't really common these days. There are a few kit guys and one-hit hopefuls around the country, but running into them takes time in the industry to build a reputation, and after that, a little bit of luck.

But by all means though, take a look around as to whats happening and try a few doors... the Red Bull guys have been modifying their rides with shaped wingtips and such; maybe you could track one of their shops down and submit your info. The states obviously has a lot more gas going through their design machines, so if you have the right cards in hand to get in there, it could be worth a shot. (...then again, that might be a limited time offer until they realize how far up s* creek they are)

In common with all the banter about low timers working in flying around here, eng is gonna be the same thing- start small, work your way up (thought the starting pay is a little nicer). Getting here is the first step, so I might not be too picky about it... the best will follow.

try searching 'Canada only' on google.ca for what you're looking for- simple stuff like 'composites' may turn up a lot. Composites is the way of the aviation future- good place to start.

You could try Cascade in Abbotsford, B.C., Field Aviation in Calgary, CAE in Edmonton, and if memory serves a US Aircraft Manufacturing company was planning to move house to Springbank
Airport in Calgary (Need confirmation on that one though from any Springbank people on here.)
Cascade works mostly on the heavies from what I understand.
I don't know if Boerk has any need for Aeronautical Engineers but you could try them too I suppose!
How about Bell Helicopters, I think they have an Engineering department in Calgary to or am I wrong?
Anyway just a couple more ideas for you!

Do a search on Viking Air too, they do some neat work and seem to really be expanding.

You are correct, that would be Epic Aircraft (owned by Aircraft Investor Resources Inc).

Bell Helicopter Canada is headquartered in Mirabel near Montreal. Not sure if they have anything out west.

Thanks duplicate,
I couldn't remember what the company name was that moved to Springbank thanks for the info. As to Bell, is that office they have at the international just a sales office then?

might also want to try the National Research Council of Canada, they have an Institute for Aerospace Research as well as a flight testing department

Amtech Aeronautical has offices in Calgary and I think still in Medicine Hat (Alberta). They are a big player in UAV design, construction and testing, with a very large military airspace block (Suffield) to play with. They have also done other aircraft mod's and flight testing that I know of, and probably lots more I don't know of.
