Better for career advancement?

Post by shimmydampner »

Which do you think would be more beneficial to moving one's career in the bush along, 200 hours on a 185 or 500 on a Super Cub? All on floats of course. Do you think going from flying a 185 to a Super Cub would be a step back, even if the time would be more than double in the Cub?

Unless ofcourse you have a company ready to hire you, pending you have 100-200 hours of 185 time, in which case 185.

But, yeah. 500 on anything vs 200 on your 185...

Shimmydampener, am I to assume that you already have 200 hours on a 185 and are looking at increasing your float time to 500 hours by flying a Cub. If you have 200 hours on a 185 then there should be no need to buy more float time. You should have no trouble getting work with that time.

If I have misread your post and you are considering one or the other to build your time to that amount then I would do a combination of both, assuming you have that much money to spend. I would do most of the time on the Cub to get maximum float time and then get about 20 hours on the 185 so you will be that much more marketable.

Good Luck!!

Go with the 185

Post by Adanac »

Hey there,

If you have the chance to fly the 185.. do it! 500hrs on a cub is great.. but I would hazzard to guess that the number of 185's jobs out there greatly out number the cub ones. Plus an up grade on each would be: Cub to a 180/185.. or 185 to a Beaver.

Go for the 185 unless the money is too good to turn down for flying the Cub.

Good luck.

I guess I should have specified more. Not talking about buying time or anything. Already have 250 hours of float time. Potential is there for either the 185 or Cub position next season. If I end up getting to have my pick of the two, I'm trying to figure out which would be more beneficial.

In that case take the 185. Just remember it will be the hardest and most demanding aircraft you will ever fly in the bush. It is all up hill if you survive a season on a 185. Not trying to scare you, just stating a fact. Take it easy and no its limits and you will be fine.

Ya, already survived one season on the 185 and scared myself shitless a couple times. Steep learning curve but extremely fun at the same time. I miss flying that airplane already. The winter will be real boring in comparison.
