Flight instructing @ $18/hour or $35/hr
If you had the choice of teaching, at the school where you got the instructor rating making $18 an hour as a class 4 but you were 20 minutes from home or teach at a school that pays $35 an hour but is 50 minutes away from home with much nicer airplanes and a better program overall which one would you choose?

I would look at which one will get me where I want to go... faster. IE... will I be able to teach multi or IFR.... how many students will I have? You can get $100/flight hour... but with one student... it's still maybe $400/week.
and 4 hours in your log book... there are soooo many factors...

Its all about the dollar bill bluenote, are you not Instructing yet?
Re: Flight instructing @ $18/hour or $35/hr
If you instruct an average of 5 hours per day, you will make an extra $85 per day at the further school. You will also spend an extra hour on the road, 30 minutes each way. Based on this logic and all else being equal, you have to decide whether it's more important to save an hour of driving or make an extra $85. But I'm sure you didn't need me to point this out for you, and there must be other factors to consider. Good luck.

that's what a person get's paid for sorting paper at an office ... lol
Re: Flight instructing @ $18/hour or $35/hr
Actually, I make less than that, and work at a bank. Of course, I am a student, and a person that is hired as a full-time paper sorter, will probably make 13-14$/h after taxes, if not less.E-Flyer wrote:that's what a person get's paid for sorting paper at an office ... lol

According to me, you have to look at this situations tax-wise, hour-wise and gas-wise. Why so? When you'll be at 35$/h the government will most probably classify you as a higher paid citizen, thus you falling into the superior tax categories, meaning, you make more, no problem, we can still cross you over by asking for more. Hence, my point. Try to look over your taxes, get informed on how much you'll be having substracted from your 35$/h salary in comparisson to your 18$/h salary. Usually taxes in Canada vary upon provinces. Us being a family of six, my parents still get taxed about 30% of each paycheck, and that brings their salaries down considerably, eventhough we are classified as the over 100 000$ and under 120 000/ year category, my parents finish the year of with something in between 65-70K, clean. Why? Because they make too much money!!!! So, if you're living alone, you might be ok with a higher salary, but if you have a spouse or a legal partner sharing the same roof with you and the status of a couple, you might end up losing in your case, and them as well.
Now, hour-wise, I suggest you try and look over on the amount of hours you'll be working. If this can boost your career, then go for it, I would even do a 60-70 minute drive, but make sure you're rested everytime that you do leave the house. Also teaching multi and IFR, that is purely awesome, not only do you get to teach it, but you log it.
Taking that the government bring your salary from 18$/h to 13,6$/h and from 35$/h to 24,5$/h; the difference is that of a 11,1$/h in between these two, then again, the difference from the second salary could be lower, and you might end up being paid 19-20$/h (strict minimum). I guess, if I were you, I'd go for the one that gives more hours, and that's closest to my house. If I were to choose between distance/hours, I'd take the one that can boost my career faster. Paywise and hourwise, the choice is obvious. Now it's all up to you!

The children of Pierre Elliot Trudeau. It's mind-bogglingWhen you'll be at 35$/h the government will most probably classify you as a higher paid citizen, thus you falling into the superior tax categories
how much damage that man did to Canada.
Back to reality ... as a contract employee, you can deduct
the cost of the (further) drive.
