We're looking at a used 430 for installation. Anyone know possible pitfalls in terms of installation/certification of the unit for enroute/terminal ops (assuming of course, that it actually works )?
Thanks,
Tids

Since nobody else has answered I'll tell you what I know.
You need to have an LSTC for the install and have it done under an Avionics AMO if you are going to use it for GNSS approaches and the like. I'm not sure if used or new makes any difference. An avionics shop should be able to give you the info you need to know.
I would send it back to Garmin and get them to
upgrade the software (not just the database -
the executable) and do all their environmental
tests so you know the unit is good before you
install it.
Get a Garmin dealer to do the install (if he will - he
may decline, even after Garmin re-certifies the
unit). FWIW.
To install a GNS430 for IFR enroute, terminal, and non-precision approaches you will need an STC as this installation requires a Flight Manual Supplement, and is available for about $1000 provided your aircraft is on the AML.
We are occasionally presented with this scenario, and our first response is to say that we need current certs which usually means sending it back to Garmin - I think their flat rate for repair/recert is around $1200. I would suggest that it would be better to send it in for the WAAS upgrade ($3000 or so) which should also take care of the recert at the same time. Garmin provides the STC to install GNS430W units, so you would then also save the $1000 for the 3rd party STC I mentioned above, plus then be capable of precision GPS approaches to boot!
Installation at our shop starts at 40 hours depending on your airframe and the depth of integration with existing equipment and instruments, which includes all new integration wiring and warranty.
I agree. Jake did good. twotter, why must you bring your BS into every dicsussion? Most anyone with an ounce of logic can see that YOU are the agressor here. YOU are the agitator.

I already do both so you'll have to come up with something original..
