British Citizen Working in Canada

Post by WakeMan »

Hi,

I hope this is the correct forum to post this in, if not im sorry.

Im looking to come to Canada to do my flight training and would like to know if it is possible for me to get my instructor ratings whilst there and stay and instruct for a year or two.

Has anyone else done this? I know it is nearly impossible for me to work in the USA.

I am British and have no right to work in Canada.

Thanks

Actually, there is something called the commonwealth, which makes the Canadian and British embassies a lot more friendly than Brits + USA..

I am sure you can get a work visa here without any whatsoever problem.

Or take that commonwealth to your advantage and apply for a permanent residency card.

As far as immigration is concerned I met an Irishman from Belfast who applied to come here through the Canadian representation in Dublin. He got in within two months!
I was shocked because from London it can take a long time unless they really need your skills here.
But at that time there was a definate bias against WASPs from England :?

There are English, Japanese, Indian and other nationals teaching here in BC.
They get student working visas and I believe a one year working visa beyond that.
Many 'foreign' instructors stay a lot longer than this when they get continued working visas tied to their employers. I know several instructors in this position.

What most people I have known have done is to get the student visa, first, then a student working visa second when they have their CPLs, and then another working visa when they complete their Instructor Ratings.
Yesterday I was told that the working visa allows you to work within the industry you are training for.
There are people working in aviation shops as these are still within the 'industry'.

I'm used to British = English bashing...
The American movies Brave Heart, and Patriot paint the English in a bad light as a rewrite of history.
Canada was pro the 'Commonwealth' peoples who had suffered under the English in history, the PC correction of perceived crimes by England in the past.

It's like "Life of Brian", that excellent historical documentary film on the history of religion, "what have the Romans done for us?" they asked.
Well what have the English done for us???

It's funny, I get people saying he's not British he's Scottish!
Education: There's a group of Islands off Europe known as the British Isles. These Islands contain the 'countries' of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man, and the Scilly Islands of course. Any inhabitants from these Islands are referred to as being British.
Eire takes an exception to being British, but all of them have British blood in them as well as Spanish etc... Saint Patrick was born either in SW England, or Wales, and was not from Ireland at all! But he did banish snakes I am told.

Thanks for the answers guys.

Although I dont get the post above, im not Scottish!

Ive had a look through the Canada immigration site, and I dont think that getting citizenship will be too easy as I dont plan on staying in Canada for the long term, I think they would be able to see that when they interview me.

I think it is possible to work on a student visa, but it all looks very confusing, it says im only allowed to work at the school that im at, which isnt really too good as it doesnt allow me to get other jobs such as bush flying etc.

All the immigration thing sounds really hard, its probably easier for me to find a job working as an instructor in the UK.

I'm a white English early (now mid) 20's guy and been in Canada for two years.

I started off with a working holiday Visa for one year (you can get these automatically, one per lifetime though), and then when that ran out I was going to get another work visa with my job. However that fell through so I nearly got deported, luckily however my company took me on full time which meant I had a decent shot at permanent residency. Although I had a week to get it sorted.

Sooo, I had to get an expensive lawyer, and ended up applying through the 'Provincal Nominee' program. Luckily it all worked out and I got my card in Febuary. 6 months in total (if I hadn't done the provincial nominee thing or been outside the country at the time it would have been 3+ years).

Basically its easy to stay and work one year, any longer than that is VERY HARD unless you have a job that they want/need (mine was IT).
Alternative is to come for a year, make friends and then get someone to marry you, although that brings its own set of problems.

This was all done on the strength of my IT skills, nothing to do with flying or student visas (I needed to work full time since I didn't have the cash for flight training up front).

Good luck anyway, you'll probably need it!

Get a student visa to do your flight training...the flight school will need to write a letter stating how long the "course" is. Make sure they specify at least a year. You are then entitled to a work visa for the same amount of time that you were at school for ie. one year. I think you may be restricted to the place where you did your training though. This is how I did it.
