Borden Airshow

Post by AEROMONKEY »

Went to the Airshow at Base Borden today....very well organized...had a good time...The Skyhawks Casa212 hit a bunch of seagulls on takeoff and had to return...Then went right back up.There was a guy there with a model Avro Arrow, he put on a very good show until it crashed right next to the crowd. anyone else there?

Why the hell are our Canadian Army ambassadors, the Skyhawks, jumping from a CASA leased from an American company? It was Borden's Canadian Forces Day for Christ's sake, and their airplane had an N-number?

"Back in the day" I dropped them out of a Buffalo a few times. I understand YQQ is having a few serviceability problems. I like Americans; I sometimes race a vintage motorcycle in the 'States. But WTF? A civilian, Spanish built, U.S. owned plane dropping the Skyhawks at a CFB?

I need another drink.

It was nice seeing the Snowbirds this afternoon with lightning and rolling clouds as a back drop to the show. They made it a short one, but for the amount I've seen them, it was finally something new!

CNB9, Lake Simcoe Regional Airport. Quite a turnout there from the locals just to see them depart/arrive :D

And if you wanted to see the "aftermath" of that Avro Arrow crash. Looks like they punctured a nice hole in the tail of the Harvard.

So what kind of runway remains at Borden? I remember a couple of years ago when they towed a CF-18 over the highway from CNY3 to Borden because Collingwood was the closest runway that could handle the jet.

That is the one they had set up as a static display. The rwy there is chewed to shit, only smaller a/c like CASA, vintage (except spitfire), and aerobatic could handle it.

Did you know the CASA 212 has a MTOW of just less than 18,000 lbs?
(Her feelings get hurt when you call her "small" )

I'm about 25km from Borden and we got raindrops the size of basketballs!

.5 later the sun was out. :smt102

The Skyhawks contract was put up for bid at some point. Fayard bid well and that's why the CASA was there. The optics of it are a little muddied though, I understand your point.

Haha!
If you want a real answer (doubt it... but hey! :D ) we only need a 10% over-gross permit on ferry flights across the pond when we have a ton of crap and an extra fuel tank in the back!

I heard that when that toy Avro Arrow piled it in, it hit the Harvard parked on the ground and did some damage. Good thing it didn't fling into the crowd...!

We had an aerobatic contest at the same time as the airshow there a few years ago and man are those runways shot. Landing a Pitts on one of those things was like when the washing-machine has 10 pairs of jeans all on the same side in the spin cycle ..

I remember somebody saying 'lets do a FOD walk' and you needed a wheelbarrow just for the taxiway FOD.

Did the model Avro really hit the Harvard? Yikes.

Thanks!

Ya the Harvard, the Tiger Moth & The Spitfire were all vintage wings. http://www.vintagewings.ca/page?s=65

The warbirds & the tow/glider used the grass. IIRC the CASA used the rwy.

Hey, wasn't that me?

I'm sorry to hear Mike's Harvard got hit. I sure hope the RC
guys have liability insurance, valid for airshows!

If I remember correctly I think they were saying the Avro alone was worth $12,000.

Thanks. Google Earth shows a patch of runway that looks like it has been maintained, but who knows how old that photo is. Anyway, Edenvale should be putting on something soon, no?

Yeah the FOD walk was Andys suggestion. Very good advice too. I started doing that religiously (after Borden) before taxiing by the maintenance shop next to my hanger and you'd be surprised what you find (wrenches/sockets) on the ramp waiting to eat up an expensive propellor.

$12,000 for a twin turbine model .. yup about right. Those engines are about $7 grand a pop.

Did not see any damage to the harvard in the pics but i'll go take a look at her in the VWOC hanger tomorrow or friday and check it out.

I've crashed a LOT of R/C planes in my R/C days and so I'd be very leary flying them in close proximity to such expensive full scale planes.
Actually I saw one of those model turbines crash in Las Vegas just near the stadium, right into the parking lot full of cars. It hit right next to a minivan, made a hell of a dent and started one of those keosene black smokey fires. Scary ...
