Balcony seat watching Pitts enter loop

Post by RatherBeFlying »

In a glider heading West from Elmira over Linwood at about 4000' Tuesday afternoon when I spot a red Pitts opposite direction a 1/4 mile or so to my left at a high rate of knots.

When he's opposite me he pulls up, perhaps for a loop or other vertical maneuver. I suppressed my curiosity to turn the glider to watch him as that might get me in his way.

And mentally went through my bailout procedure.

Found out later that my transmit on 123.2 (the Elmira freqs) was not working (likely because of low battery which the last pilot left in the a/c instead of putting it back in the charger).

Question to the Pitts pilot: Did you see me?

Perhaps you transmitted on 126.7?

Note to Transport:

THIS WAS NOT ME

Presuming that you are not talking about Elmira, NY
and are referring to Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario
there are a couple of other obvious candidates
for a "red Pitts" in that neighborhood. One choice
is probably the best aerobatic pilot in Canada (not me).

Nah, there is a fellow who flies a Red Pitts out of / around CYKF - I saw him practicing around the airport a couple of weeks ago.

C-FQSI the 2 seat Pitts S-2A, think it was one of the first certified Pitts in Canada. Was originally owned by Gerry Younger (the man Andy is referring to as probably the best aerobatic pilot in Canada, he competed in the worlds a couple of times, once in an Extra 300/S and once in a Pitts S-1T).

QSI has trained quite a few folks on Pitts, myself included. Last I heard she was joint owned by a small group in Kitchener and Gerry was flying a champ or something.

Good memories.

White background -- was that cloud?

Anyway, there's a bit of red on the wingtips.

And should I have been listening on 126.7 or 123.2?

No problem, I enjoyed seeing you -- it's just that once you went vertical, I didn't know what you were up to next and I didn't want to get in the way of the next maneuver.

When ATC asks you to do "a 360 in your current position",
the stick comes back, +4G's in the pull to the vertical, float
over the top for a nice round loop, and another gentle +4G's
in the pull to level again from the vertical downline

As we all know, CAR 620.31 applies:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#602_31
602.31 ... the pilot-in command of an aircraft shall

(a) comply with and acknowledge, to the appropriate air traffic control unit, all of the air traffic control instructions directed to and received by the pilot-in-command
