ATC was rude to the voice with brown skin at YPK today

It was dripping off the controllers voice. It was this afternoon. He made the student do all kinds of stuff. And every call from the controller was rude. I was embarassed with this behavior exclusive to the voice with brown skin. Nav Canada needs to do something here.

Are you talking about the east-indian controller at CYPK_TWR ? If so, it's no news. He's been rude continously. He was even picking up attitude when he was in CZBB for a little while. I wonder what's gonna be done about it. Nav Can seems to care less these days. If they fired him or something he'd probably raise some lawsuit for discrimination against race or w/e.
Gahhh, but I know what you're talking about.

No,
An ATC controller was selectively difficult to a pilot.

So that controller from YPK happens to be my x-girlfriends landlord. Supposedly he's a nice guy outside of work but god help you if you miss one of his calls while trying to fly.

The YPK controllers have all been very accommodating every time I fly there including the East Indian one that you guys seem to think has an attitude issue.
As far as making the student do "weird things" we really cant speculate what was going on but maybe its due to the pilot not understanding the radio calls therefore causing the ATC guy to get bent out of shape. Its the same at ZBB with a particular school that always has students I can barely even understand and the ATC person quite frequently has to tell plane X not to keep extending downwind to a point that one day they said "if you cant understand you will have to land"
Same story with Glen Valley I've heard my fare share of weird radio calls such as;
Them: "X aircraft just over the little lake"
Me: "what lake?"
Them: "um... the little lake"
Them: "X 3000ft north of mountain upper airwork"
Me: "X is also at 3000ft, what mountain are you north of?"
Them: "X 3000ft north of big mountain"
Stuff like this shouldn't be happening but I can see totally see ATC being snappy at someone if the don't understand what is going on or are not following instructions. But I doubt a controller would have such a beef with one particular guy considering there are so many international students flying around the lower mainland.

I think the instructors should ensure their students know the names of the landmarks out in that area to help stop confusion.
I know I didn't when I was a student pilot, and my instructor most likely did tell me, but being focused on tests I didn't pay much attention. So maybe some more emphasis should be placed on this.
Cheers,
Wolfie
Or as Canpilot says, just put the names on the f*ckin chart.

If you're over some tiny little village or pond that most people have never heard of and isn't marked on the charts, you're better just saying you're x miles to the xy of some larger landmark.

Some of the charts even have visual reporting points printed on them to help those unfamiliar with the area .
Sounds like these schools need to have a safety meeting before as Russell Peters says in his imitation of his east indian father "Somebody gonna get Hurt "

Pitt Meadows ATC is usually very friendly and it is rare that they get audibly upset.
I've always found them to be cooperative.
Even at Boundary Bay ATC is totally different to the days I first came here back in 89 through the early 90's when you were guaranteed to hear some poor student being reamed out by ATC.
At least in those days Barney had a sense of humour, asking them to keep their circuits within this province!
These have been hot summer's days and tempers always rise at this time of the year...
Many students flog across Pitt Meadows without listening to the ATIS which often reports "Parachuting from 10,000 feet...".
I'd rather pass CYPK well to the East or West in these circumstances.
As for ESL... The language testing is not working, it's a stupid test that has no relevance to aviation at all. Transport Canada should take a serious look at whether these tests truly comply with the ICAO requirements.
I took an English language test in China, it was produced in New Zealand, and it was relevant with the emphasis being on understanding aircraft movements and ATC instruction.
BTW there's a new landmark SW of the Colossus Cinema and the highway interchange there, it's a Buddhist Temple.
Another note...
King George Airpark has a restriction of 1500 feet when passing overhead.
King George Traffic is on 123.5. CZBB may not be able to give you traffic advisories while you are between CZBB and CYNJ zones, and when they can they will not see the ultralights that practice in that area on the radar.
Leaving the Boundary Bay zone, just after soemone mentioned this problem, I heard a Cessna 210 report at 1,100 feet inbound from south of the racetrack.
Since aircraft join overhead King George at 1,200 feet, and may not have a transponder, there is increased risk.

It'll be interesting when the students have to take the English Proficiency test "Zulu-Bav-o, Bav-o" and the rest of them won't know what to do... I know its not a perfect system but maybe it can weed out a few?
Ive flown a lot out of YPK and all the times ATC has been very laid back and easy so I doubt they'd single out a certain person. The only times I've heard them being snappy is when the pilot or student doesn't have a clue.

Safety meeting required
CFI's set the date time and place and nobody flies unless they have been briefed as per the safety meeting

Glen Valley is especially bad, I've seen so many people cross through there going back and forth between YPK and YCW without saying a peep and one day I saw a guy overshooting Glen Valley Intl. to the west as a guy was following the river and turned south right in front of his overshoot. Needles to say I was staring in disbelief from above and we'll just say it looked very close. A note to the float plane guys too, a company I worked at before that flies up and down the river has pilots that weren't even aware or knew where glen valley advisory space is so I'm sure they've zipped up and down there right past glen valley without ever being on 122.75 or even aware that a Cessna on a forced approach could cut them right off at any time. Maybe there should be a big red border or something around Glen Valley on the VTA with 122.75 clearly written on there in large font because its just not a very safe place to be.
On another note to the students at ZBB, I keep my plane at ZBB since it is the closest to my house but I cant image why you'd want to fly out of that airport as you burn so much time just trying to get to the practice area. It was okay when there was Cherry Point but since the government has taken that away from us unless we want to file a flight plan and have our ducks in a row train out of YPK, YXX, YNJ instead and save yourself some dough for when you want to fly long x-countries that actually teach you real world experience instead of flying the same route you could do blindfolded. Boundary Bay in general is just a rip-off, expensive gas, expensive parking, fuel surcharges, full circuits, long taxi times, sub-par facilities, yadda yadda... if I lived anywhere else I'd love to say good-bye to that place.
Sorry that wasn't really on topic but I had to say that.

I'm glad to see some people standing up for YPK on this one.
The original post mentioned nothing of the situation, the details, the possible safety issues, the complexity, or the pilots competence, it only mentioned the color of the pilots skin.
Not really the type of quality post one would care to read on avcanada.

I dunno, I think it's kinda a problem if a controller is giving the pilots with the accents a hard time. Assuming that there is effective communication between the controller and the student in question, of course. If the student's English is so poor that ATC can't understand him and the controller's workload is already high then he should be asking the instructor to take over the radio work. If it was a solo student with communication problems then I absolutely agree that the controller should instruct him to land.

Biggles, I don't recall the mention of any of the details you have.
Sure would've been nice to have the details though, rather than just racially charged unsubstantiated comments.

How do we know the controller was frustrated with the student due to his nationality? Maybe he was frustrated with the student period. Perhaps the student had caused unsafe actions. Who are we to point fingers right off the bat? I dunno... Just was thinking about it a little.
I think CZBB is popular as it is accessible to many people... It's a quick drive for me.
I also have never had a problem with CZBB or CYPK towers... or any for that matter... I don't even think I've heard any of them be rude, not even the east Indian at CYPK... was always nice to me!

I think they get more frustrated when safety is being jeopardized, and so they should.

I don't have any details either. That's why I had "If"s in front of my sentences.
