The Six Best Toronto Port Authority Noise Complaints

Post by flyingdan »

From the Torontoist:
http://torontoist.com/2008/08/the_best_ ... laints.php
Two years after it was a major election issue, the Toronto Island Airport is no less contentious. Today, CommunityAIR forwarded on the Toronto Port Authority's newly-released collection of noise complaints submitted in June, and there are plenty: in total, there were 195 complaints from 65 complainants, a significant increase over previous months. And sometimes there were dozens of complaints filed for one individual incident, like when a plane underwent engine maintenance early one Sunday morning and garnered some thirty complaints.

Pegged by CommunityAIR as documentation of "torture," the complaints tell of frustration, but most still manage to be reasonable, succinct, detailed, and totally sympathetic. Most look like this one:
Image

That's not to say that the 83-page summary of complaints doesn't make for good reading, though. Here are a few gems that, for one reason or another, stood out from the pack.

Image
Say what you will about Ernest Hemingway's temperament—the man could write.

Image
And there's Faulkner, showing off as usual.

Image
Hahah.

Image
Slowly but steadily, God enacts His revenge on Atheists and people who enjoyed Luminato.

Image
It probably wasn't the author's intention, but this complaint makes living near the islands seem really exciting.

Image
And this, obviously, is our favourite.

This is not a complaint — this is a message in favour of the continued

When I take over the world I'm going to have my minions evict the entire population of Ward's Island and turn the place into my own personal rifle range (where I will use my .50 cal) and landing strip for my collection of really loud old school airplanes. Not sure where I'd relocate the residents to, any suggestions?

If I could live anywhere in Toronto, I'd live on the threshold of any of the runways on the Island.

But that's just me.

Curiosity made me check the CFS...does anyone know where the designated area is for engine runs? It's not in there.

Also, the PRO section says all jets and ceratin types of propeller aircraft are prohibited from utilizing the airport. Does anyone know (and I don't mean opinions) what prop aircraft are banned from going in to CYTZ?

Now that would have been either C-FHJQ (S/N 011) or C-GVPP (S/N 072) both owned by Trans Capital Air.

I used to do the gnd runs at the threshold of RWY33. Never on sundays though (who works on sundays????:) )

I do recall the company getting a noise complaint along with a letter showing the flight path. It's too bad that particular A/C was up north at the time doing a charter.

I am curious now as to where Porter does their runs at the island.........

I used to live on Stadium Rd, directly across from YTZ. Before that, I lived on Oriole Pkwy, where Avenue Rd detours around Upper Canada College. The noise level just from the street on Oriole was 10 times worse than anything that YTZ ever had to offer, not to mention that it continued all night, with people feeling the need to honk their horns at 3AM, because the car ahead of them was taking too long to get around the corner! Anybody who complains about the noise at YTZ is just a whiner who wants to jump on the bandwagon with Community Air and the like. How many noise complaints do you see from the party boats that go up and down the western gap all evening throughout the summer with their sound systems blaring?

This airport noise complaint form is difficult to use. If I send a complaint
every time there s excessive airport noise, I ll be sending you five or ten
complaints a day. Is that what you want us to do - send ten complaints a
day?
Where do we start, perhaps with the unnecessarily loud ferry foghorn
early in the morning and late at night, especially on Sundays when there s
no fog.
The aircraft two minute warm-ups on the ground are seriously disruptive
in our homes, and the stench of aircraft fuel in the Music Garden is
sickening. I ve vomited twice already when gagging on aircraft fuel fumes
in the Music Garden.
And then there s the noise of helicopters that wake us up after midnight.
This is one noisy fucking airport and I really resent the fact that you re in
my neighborhood, especially when our sleep is interrupted all night long
by aircraft noises.
So, what was the time of the incident? Which incident, there are so many.
I m hearing aircraft noise right now at 4 in the afternoon, and it s the
same every hour. But I don t think the Port Authority cares about our
personal problems, so what s the use of filling out complaint forms.
M-07 Bathurst/Queen's Quay Area
Response: Comments noted. With regards to sounding of ferry horn, this is a marine
regulation.
Are you sure that those "aircraft fuel fumes" you've smelled in the Music Garden weren't actually marine fuel fumes from the marinas that are adjacent to the garden?
And I'm pretty sure that the airport was there before your neighbourhood, or at the very least before you moved there. If the maybe 2 MEDEVAC helicopters that you hear throughout the night constitute "especially when our sleep is interrupted all night long
by aircraft noises." then you can spend a night with my kids and see that you have NOTHING to complain about!

And my personal favourite:
SMALL PLANE STATIONARY ON THE RUNWAY. PIERCING SOUND!
WHAT THE F&*@??
Aircraft Category General Aviation MU2 Mitsubishi Twin Turboprop
And to the guy who made several complaints about the Q400 sounding like "a squadron of fighters" flying overhead, do you think we can arrange for a CF18 squadron to demonstrate what that really sounds like to him?

And thus the bourgeoisie has wasted more precious O2 with their constant bitching and moaning.

Now if they were, say, living on the edge of the combat area of Cold Lake, hearing strafeing runs every morning, I may be able to sympathize. Ah, who am I kidding, my heart is dead towards the ignorant upper class.

Now all there needs to be is an old Ford Tri-motor flying out of there doing Sunday morning mail runs. That'll get 'em going!

How about we all start phoning in saying how much we like the noise and want more of it. Complain when there are no aircraft that it is too quiet. I'm sure the are some well paid Porter pilots living nearby that can do this as locals.

If they think a Q400 engines are loud, someone should grace them with a DC3 and do a few runups. You bought near an airport, suck it up.

Full power Mu-2 runups anyone? I would love to live near the city centre airport. Of course I would have to shell out millions to do so.

You bought near an airport, suck it up.
That is the irony, they are not property owners, they are squatters who moved in well after the airport was operational. Personally, I would like to see the airport go back to the military and have a squadron of F-18's move in.

Living just North of Gerrard West of Broadview, I am regularly wakened by medevacs in the early hours of the morning.

I never complain.

When the cops were testing their helicopter which had a fuel run down to YTZ just about every night at 3am, I complained every time.

There's also the trains -- lotsa luck on that one, but much easier on the sleep patterns than a twin rotor.
