PPL before college?

Post by Bucker »

Quick question....

Do you need your PPL before signing up for the aviation management program's at Sault or Confederation college's (to come out with your CPL) ? If not, would a portion of PPL training (ground or whatnot) at a local flight school be beneficial before going away to college? I'm just entry level at this, and I know it ain't cheap.

Thanks,

Bkr

I hate to tell you this but if you can't look this up on their website, you're going to have a hell of a time reading the CAR's.
http://www.saultc.on.ca/Programs/4061.asp -> Minimum Academic Requirements -> last point.
Students who hold a Private Pilot Licence or a Recreational Permit will participate in a modified flight program in Semesters 2 and 3 as compared to those who do not have any flying experience.
Next paragraph:
Academic Recommendations
Applicants are strongly encouraged to acquire several hours of flight training at a recognized flying school – preferably to the solo level – before commencing the program. This is to ensure that the experience of flying in light aircraft is agreeable to the applicant. English, physics and technical mathematics, including Calculus, at the university (‘U’) level are strongly recommended.
Students must maintain a passing grade in each course to remain in the program. Repeats are not allowed. If a student is unsuccessful in meeting the program requirements they will be involuntary withdrawn from all courses.
From the above I would have to say that:
You do not NEED a PPL however they do recommend being at the "solo" stage prior to starting

http://www.confederationc.on.ca/flight- ... issionreqs
On the left side you also have http://www.confederationc.on.ca/flight- ... ourses.asp which indicates that you will start from
AF 102 FLIGHT TRAINING FOR PPL
45 Credit Hours

Prerequisite: Program Admission Requirements
Co-requisite: AF 111, AF 150

This course will introduce and develop fundamental aircraft handling skills, knowledge and attitudes that are necessary for the student to safely fly the first solo circuit.
Having said that... I doubt you will need any ground instruction outside the school. You will get into theory WAYYYYY beyond a normal PPL at a flight school.

Hope that helps

I'm moving to T-bay on thursday to start Flight-Management at Confed.

Not sure if its true, but I heard they prefer you to come into the program without any previous flying experience. I guess they like to start fresh rather than build on another instructors work.

I'm sure a ground school course would be beneficial though, as I hear theirs is pretty rigorous.

Sault and Confed start ya from scratch.

I went to the Soo with about 12 hours dual (hadn't soloed yet) and PPL ground school completed. There were people in my class with PPLs, and people that had 0 hours in their logbook. There was no correlation between who graduated, and how much previous airplane/groundschool time they had.

If you do the work, you will pass.

Some people with PPLs before they came to the school had a tough time when flying started because they had less time than others to get used to the airplane.

PM me with any other questions about the Soo if ya want- that goes for anyone here.

-istp

Don't know about Sault, but I would highly recommend getting 10 hours or so under your belt before going to Confed, it will save you valuable time in the syllabus. The first 7 or 8 hours is really just getting used to the feel of the airplane, so if you have a feel for it going in, then you won't have to waste the 14 hours (or so) they give you there to go solo just learning the basics. Then you and your instructor can just quickly review the basics, then get more time at the more difficult stuff like stalls, spins, spirals, and (gulp...) landing.
If you have a license/previous time but havn't flown in a few years, for god sakes go learn to fly again before showing up, otherwise this could bite you in the ass as you don't get as many hours to go solo as the other students. At the very least review your PGI notes/flight training manual.
And lastly, if you have previous time and are nervous about it, don't worry. Just study hard and most importantly keep an open mind with the training. Waaay too many students have gone in there and tried to fly the airplane their own way, which doesn't work at that school. Do as your instructor says and you should be alright.

Hope that helps all you imminent Con College students.

P.S. Rubbing Whitey's moustache is good luck, it pretty much guarantees a pass.

Nope, lol I know a few guys who went to confed and came out as instructors. They knew nothing about flying until they graduated and then when they gradded confed they came out with the mentality that they're great pilot's cause they "drink." Lol - I don't know but I think the college gives u a bit of a cocky attitude if I am not mistaken? I am sure if that's what these guys continue like they won't make it far - they'll probably fail the medical cause of low liver enzymes. Drinking is a personal preference, not a career based decision. If that's how you think, I personally think low of you. Please don't become like that when you go into confed? cause a bunch have.

But anyway, good luck :)
