Vault if you want VFR, keep working at whatever job you're at and tell them to mark you down for VFR only. There may be quite a delay getting in as we're switching from centralized training to regional and there may be a gap between the one program ending and the other one starting. I'd keep that in mind but still wait it out.

You are applying for a career, if you wait for the VFR course, wait for it. Your chances of being successful at VFR, if you're not sent to Toronto or Calgary Int'l, are significantly higher than IFR. If you take the IFR course now, you'll end up paying tuition and receiving no pay for several months then 30g/year. You could train for up to 2 years at that salary with nothing to show for it if you don't make it, and 70% of the applicants don't make it. Then if you still want VFR, you'll have to wait 8 years to downgrade. The only downfall to VFR is you can get posted nationally and will be there for at least 2 years before being eligible to bid and sometimes significantly longer. The good thing is if you want Winnipeg, they are hurting for controllers and with the new regional training, you may even go there. It's not an easy tower to start out at but a fun mix of traffic once you get used to it. If you get posted elsewhere, your chances of being able to return home are really high, just be prepared to deal with great people like Kafufo who really appreciate your work.

Was there even a VFR course offered in YWG during my active candidacy?
