Just curious : what is the biggest plane with slowest approach speed? Martin Waterbomber?

How about the AN-2
Empty= 7,600 lbs.; Max Take Off= 12,125 lbs.; Max Landing= 11,574 lbs.;
Red Line Speed: V-NE 162 kts.
White Line Flaps: V-FE 70 kts.
Best Glide: 65 kts.
Maximum Speed: 139kts. or 160mph. (120kts. more typical)
Economy Cruise Speed: 100kts. or 115mph. (95kts. more typical)
Minimum Speed: 49kts. or 56mph.
Take-Off Speed: 43kts. or 50mph. (15 degrees of flap).
Landing Speed: 46kts. or 53mph. (30 degrees of flap).
Stall Speed: 35-40kts. but controlled descents are possible at 25kts. or 30mph.

There's probably no hard data on it but I would guess the Spruce Goose. Still has the largest wing in existence and a 'relatively' light wood airframe.

Except it never flew out of ground effect....
The Dornier 228 with full flap available is pretty slow. I can't remember now, been too long, but for a 14,000lb airplane, you can fly it REALLY slow.

Approach speed is 100 knots and landing is about 80 knots.

DC-3, Vmca 67 KIAS, definitely not fast at Vne 170, but moves a shyteload of stuff

How about one of the dash series? I've heard that the -7 can be slowed right up on approach..
XSbank - you've got some experience here, IIRC..

Dash 7
83 Knots, 42,000 pounds (max landing weight), Flap 45
Looks like the Mars wins, but the Dash 7 is still impressive.

Martin Mars: Max Gross=165,000 lbs. Wing area=3,686 sqft.
Wing loading=44.76lbs/sqft.
Spruce Goose: Max Gross=400,000lbs. Wing area=11,430 sqft.
Wing loading=35.00lbs/sqft.
With a little research I think the Spruce Goose wins based on lighter wing loading. And I think breaking out of water takes more effort than flying out of ground effect.

Just remember, the Mars doent land at gross weight.

I can't remember the exact #'s, but the HS 748 did a damn good job landing 43,000 lbs under 90 kts. I'd guess around 83 kts if I trusted my memory.

Can the Mars takeoff from displacement with a full water load or just from the step?

^ I'd assume from a stand still. They wern't always waterbombers remember. Be hard to load a dozen jeeps on board with the thing cruising at 40 knots on the step :p
Unless of course they got some sort of upgross kit with bomber conversion.

I was just thinking because they load on the step. Do they get on the step, load up, then takeoff?
Most air tankers anyways operate at higher gross weights because they can dump loads in case of engine failure. I remember watching DC-6s come out of Penticton on a hot day only a couple hundred feet off the ground by the time they are over the fence.

Yeh, iflyforpie when you lose an engine just after take off with a full load on you experience that factor all you instructors get a woody over knowing...the law of intensity.
Here is a weird thing though fllyforpie I actually lost an engine just after take off when when I was water bombing ( at about fifty feet actually ) and I lived to tell about it.
So would TC give me credit for learning the law of intensity so I can be a better teacher?

Thanks for the reply .. BTW I am not an instructor anymore. I also have lost an engine on takeoff, but it was my only engine. I also lived to tell about it and kept the plane in one piece

Yes thats how they do it. HuD brought up a good point as well, of taking off fully loaded. I guess with enough lake they could eventually get on step fully loaded and eventually take off. How many miles of lake/ocean they would need to do this I have no idea. The aircraft as well had JATO in the early days when used by the Navy, so that is another thing to factor in.

Really? I thought the weight limits for starting the slide were 148500lbs, and to even attempt to pick up a load a min of 60 kts is required, but dont let me rain the new era's bullshit parade those numbers were from back in the day when the operators knew what they were doing. But........

Huh? wtf are you talking about? I think you have been inhaling too much aluminum dust there. New Era? Back in the day? Old operators?? Btw pick up is 60-70 knots today much like it has been for the last umpteen years. That SOP hasnt changed. Let me know when you have sobered up so we can carry this conversation on intelligently.

A380 gross takeoff weight is 1,208,000lbs.
Approach speed is 135 knots.
