Where did "looking for" come from
What's with pilot's using the term "Looking For". I hear it all the time (Im not ATC). ABC is looking for lower.....xyz is looking for the IFR to nomans land....Keep looking. Why can't people just use "Requesting". Does "looking for" sound 'cooler'? I'm bored and wanted to rant.
Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Here's another...."And, center......" Who starts a transmission with "AND"??
I still think "Three three oh..." is an altitude, and "Three three zero..." is a HEADING!!

Three Three Oh is a flight level not an altitudeDoc wrote:Here's another...."And, center......" Who starts a transmission with "AND"??

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
String it all together and you might have a coherent request,
"And, uhhh, Centre this is ABC123, you can check we're 150 miles back, at three three oh, inbound estimating the field in 45 minutes. Looking for the, uhh, current runway surface condition."

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Here's another one
"....good morning...."
I'm kidding. politeness is a very CANADIAN thing @ Navcanada. The U States stick to their straight forward dry like toast transmissions...even when it ain't busy.
There is something exciting knowing you're back in Canadian airspace when you hear our friendly controllers and FSS on the radio.
"ABC123, Trannah Centre, good morning...plan for a visual...and nice to have you back Birddog...we at the centre missed ya. We are opening up the airspace for you. Cleared to land from 162 miles out."

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
I'm guilty of the "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon" thing on first contact. Personally, I avoid anything when transferring to the next sector as you pilot dudes are easily confused.
"Birddog One, Contact Center on 132.25 See ya!"
"Sure. Contact Center on 132.323........ya.......ummm, say again the frequency."
A few I don't get "Enjoy your flight/day/evening/holding when you get to wherever your going" or the ubiquitous "Have a nice day".

I am also guilty of good morning/afternoon/evening.
Takes half a second and makes it more personal/homey.
I don't have a problem with it from the other end of the mic, either.

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
I also find you getter better treatment from the controllers by saying good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night... but even more important... Thank You!!

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Being on the "other end of the mic", it always gets my day going good when that initial call to centre starts with goooooood morning. The Mexicans and South American controllers seemed to enjoy my massacre of their language trying to give them a Buenos ****...good for a chuckle anyway

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
In Indo, it was very uncommon not to hear it... Selamat Pagi, Selamat Siang, Selamat Sore and Selamat Malam. Depending on the time of day, you said one of these four at the beginning of your initial transmission. As well as Terimah Kasih at the end for Thank you.... add Banyak for very much.

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
"looking For" man am I bad for that one
what makes it worse is I'm actually looking for my approach clearance and not "lower". Requesting is definitely better I'll try and make the mental changes
As for the Good Mornings/Afternoons I'm a huge fan, I always throw it into my initials, always will
"Thank you" on the other hand rarely gets used, I will be more then willing to thank you if you give me something special, but saying thank you for a landing clearance just bugs me.
aaaaand
Cheers

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Would you thank a waiter for bringing you your coffee at breakfast? Sure it is there job but saying thank you is just polite and us Canadians are knowing for being polite eh. Did your mother not teach you to mind your Ps and Qs? I don't wanna end up like the US where you are polite and hold the door open for a lady or let them get on the elevator first with a smile and they look at you like you are going to rape them. Parish the thought! A little Please and Thank You is OK in my book provided the frequency is not slammed.
Cheers,

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Shortly after my first solo (gives you a sense of my experience & ability) I was in the circuit at a controlled airport. The circuit was very busy and the controller had her hands full juggling everyone. Things got interesting when someone had to do a go-around. With my "considerable " experience to date I had some difficulty keeping up with spacing, speed, and all the rapid fire and unfamiliar instructions.
Back on terra firma and now talking to ground (same controller) she cleared me to the ramp. I finished my acknowledgment with "and thanks for your patience". Silence for bit and then came a very surprised "You're Welcome". Somehow I felt better and I think she did as well. From that point on (perhaps my imagination) I swear that she recognized my voice and there was a new tone to our exchanges.
All this to say that a thank you (required or not) goes a long way.

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
Really? Interesting. I'm constantly saying 'thanks' just because, well, it's in my nature in real life to thank people for services redered...no matter what professionDHC3Rwannafly wrote:Couldn't agree more.Lurch wrote:

I'll mental note it for the future.
Re: Where did "looking for" come from
"Thank you", while greatly appreciated, won't really affect your number in the sequence.

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
I'll try to remember not to say "Thank You" I guess... however, it does go against everything I've been taught for the last 25 years. Obviously won't use it when congested, but I think I'll still say it when able.

Re: Where did "looking for" come from
I'm a big user of the Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening. In fact, sometimes I find myself looking down at my watch half way through the transmission to make sure I got the right time of day. Usually goes something like, "Good ... afternoon! FKLY is inbound..." I think the controllers enjoy it -- they seem to have a bit more enthusiasm with me, but I don't know if that's just 'cause I'm around again

A whole case of 12 year old Macallan...if you worked out YYZ and or YUL I'd consider it...but there would be conditions...like I would need to be called Sir SuperStar everytime you heard me on the radio...

10 year old (cask strength of course)???? Huh? Huh?
Tell you what......
You let me know next time you're on the frequency, and we'll see what happens.

Jerricho,
I fully expect to be told to 'hold' even with no one else flying in the zone if I make my presence known to you
