Air traffic control
This phrase has since been used by civilian pilots in response to traffic advisories provided by air traffic controllers (ATC). The pilot's response "Tally" or "Tally-ho" tells air traffic controllers that the pilot has seen the air traffic in question. For example:
ATC: "ABC aircraft identifier, traffic at two o'clock, seven miles, a Boeing 737, west-bound, at 4000 feet."
Pilot: "ABC, Tally-ho."

And you believe everything you see on the Internet??????? The term is one heldover from Brit pilots in the movies and possibly WW2 newsreels but in reality rarely ever used ...and I've been flying for nearly 60 years.tesox2 wrote:From Wiki

"Roger" - definition can be found in TP 1158
"Wilco" - definition can be found in TP 1158
"Tally Ho" - not so much.

As I was reading Airways (magazine) January 2009 edition. eight miles a minute to Male the pilot of a A330 use Tally-ho to acknoledge ATC on spotting traffic.is Tally-ho not universally understood?
Does ICAO acknowledge Tally-ho?

Tally means you see a bandit.
Visual means you see a friendly aircraft.
Both are commonly used in Air-Air engagements.
e.g.: "Alphas, bandit left 10 O'Clock, 1 mile, level."

Unless you plan to shoot down the aircraft you see, I'd use visual...

Funny - I've heard "tally-ho" lots and never gave it a second thought. Especially when the other airplane is a HO.
I've also heard "Got the Fokker in sight"
when appropriate....
I personally dislike "got em on the fish finder"....really? A fish finder? (ref to TCAS)
When you hear "Radar Contact" in response to passing traffic, that gets your attention
(especially if the other plane in question has air to air capability!)

It just helps getting the eyes in the right direction quickly and get a tally more quickly, in my experience anyways. How many times did I hear 10 O'Clock and looked right... Yeah, I wouldn't say if if the controller was busy and usually only said it to other a/c in uncontrolled areas... ie. Hawker coming in to Pond Inlet says we're coming from so and so and are at this altitude... Okay, negative visual, but we got you on the fish finder.
Something like that.

Hehe, another misconception is that it matters to us if you have him TCAS or not. It doesn't change anything for me. I can't not pass traffic or stop separation if you have him TCAS, I can't give you a visual to follow a TCAS aircraft and I still have to tell you when you are clear of the traffic. It kinda gets of annoying.

I was gonna say something about that. But that's not standard phraseology. I'll just stick to 'Adios' instead of 'Tally-ho'....just because I'm the only ethnic guy flying an airplane in Canada...wait there is one more.

I'm pretty sure that this is still standard phraseology for our military for friendlies or bandits. Either that or the old guys are teaching the new guys to say it whenever they spot a civilian aircraft or one of their own. Also, Nav Can 1 uses it all the time but then again... that's Nav Can.

The phrase certainly turns up here and there (it's in the SIR Agreement for them Fighter Jocks).
But alas, we are not to hear from the lowly controller on first contact "Jazz8982, Toronto Departure, Tally ho!"......(well, we might. You never know what's going to come out of those YYZ guys mouths)
