I want to get back to my profession. Please help!

Post by Reaz »

My family and I were extremely excited when I received my Transport Canada ATPL.

We thought it was just a matter of time when I will again get back to cockpit. Start the profession of my love. I am saying 'getting back', because I was off from this profession for last couple of years due to migration.

Having ATPL, 3000 plus total hours, 800 PIC hours in Dash-8/100, 350 PIC hours in Cessna Grand Caravan a/c, Flight Safety Initial & recurrent training from Toronto and Wichita, Jet flying experience; I had no doubt in my mind of getting at least a First Officer job in Canadian Aviation Industry.

But the reality was different. It is almost a year I received my TC ATPL. And still I am out of my dream profession. The profession I was in for the last fifteen years.

I was professionally sound and had an incident/accident free flying career. Don't I deserve at least an interview call?

Migration? Ducks or caribou?

Are you looking in the correct places? Does your resume reflect what you have to offer? Are your job-hunting skills polished?

Many orgs, from EI to community colleges put on courses on resume writing and job-hunting skills. They usually take a week or so to do, I would suggest you start there.

800 hours as captain of a Dash 8 with only 3000 hours total time says that you have come from a country that has lower experience requirements than here. Where have you been applying? Your Dash 8 experience will be a great asset down the road but perhaps you should be promoting your Caravan experience more right now. You don't want to take a step backwards but after a year of trying you should consider lowering your standards to find employment. Start looking north if you want to go that route. If not try Jazz. If you don't mind being a co-pilot again and can live on the low wages.

You sound like Porter material. Did you apply there?
Anyway, sending out resumes does not always cut it.
Network. Call your old buddies and find out where they are. Have them walk your resume to their CPs and list them as references.
Companies get tons of email with resumes of all kinds. Someone that works for them and vouches for you will most probably get you an interview.
Good luck.

I live in Toronto.
I am willing to relocate anywhere in Canada.
I applied almost all known companies within Canada.

Thanks to everyone responding.

Have you used the transport canada air operator search? I HIGHLY doubt you've applied to even 1/100 of the companies in Canada. When I was instructing I used to take every Tuesday off and call places from 8am-8pm and hit places across all time zones. In 6 months I hardly dented the list. I can't imagine applying to "all known companies in Canada".

Nope.

You are in the same pool as many other people, from canada, with the same experience or even more.

But hey, you should have no problems getting a call if you apply.

Mattedfred,

I am not sure what you meant by, "English is his 2nd language".

I believe the ENGLISH language shouldn’t be a challenge for a person who flew internationally and within FAA airspace. The person having FAA, Transport Canada and two other countries ATPL must have had shown enough command in ENGLISH (as a second language).

Moreover, that person even didn't get an interview call to show his Language proficiency (If that was at all an issue)!
