The Airbus A380 double-decker jumbo jet will be making its commercial debut in Canada this June at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Emirates Airline will be adding the world's largest plane to its Toronto-Dubai route on June 1.

Emirates, owned by the Dubai government, launched the service three times a week in October, 2007.

The carrier said it has been seeing strong demand on the 358-seat Boeing 777 deployed on the route, so it makes sense to switch to the larger Airbus to accommodate more passengers.

Dubai-based Emirates has been lobbying Ottawa for permission to increase its Toronto-Dubai service to daily flights.

In November, 2007, Air France and Airbus operated an A380 on a test flight, touching down in Paris with 519 passengers after a six-hour trip from Montreal.

Air Canada doesn't have any immediate plans to order A380s, but Air France has said it would consider introducing the plane on Montreal-Paris flights.

Three Canadian airports – Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal – have made the modifications required to handle the double-decker configuration and wide wingspan.

My comments aside about the future of the A380 in YYZ, removing the flagship airplane off a high profile route like NYC is pretty substantial, isn't it?

A recent email I received speaks about the "flooding" of capacity by state-owned EK. Canada is a target. These guys plan to have 650 WIDEBODY aircraft by 2020. Their country has barely 1 million people. Here's the question. What do you think they plan on doing with all those airplanes? Canada's new "flag carrier"???

And they're not the only gulf carrier adding capacity. Given Abu Dhabi's recent injection of money into Dubai, it'll be interesting to see what the future holds for Emirates and Etihad.

The population of the UAE is estimated to be 2.94 million, with a growth rate of around 6.5 per cent a year

The 1 million I refer to is the NATIVE population. Doesn't include all you expats. This is very important because EK has stated that the increase in capacity is due to an increase in Saudi leisure travel. But hey, even with your numbers, the capacity is staggering. I wish I could show you the email but I am prohibited from doing so. Suffice it to say you will be hearing more about this in the future. Yes, the world is definitely becoming a smaller village. Bring on the competition. Just not the state owned type.

Three million spread across the seven emirates is not a lot of people. Sure, the growth has been there and it's still there although forecast to be lower (yet still positive).

EK is predominantly a sixth freedom carrier. The anticipated growth is not to/from UAE but through DXB hub. 58 A380's are not for to/from UAE. With the global recession hitting Europe, Asia, North America, it has to impact the gulf carriers. The very markets they are targeting are experiencing reduced demand. You can't force people to fly.

I'm not wishing bad on EK. Not at all. I find it a bit ambitious to maintain an "everything's just fine" attitude when it's crumbling all around for everybody else. Just because it's EK does not mean consumers will not decide to take that vacation despite losing their jobs. You know what I mean?

I think they are also looking beyond the near future. Let's face it, oil will run out in this region or will diminish to very small quantity. What other revenue-making industries should be explored? Make no mistake, these guys have been preparing for the black gold drought recently and are on a mission. Much like India and China saw opportunity in cheap labour. I don't have a problem so long as our governments make it an even playing field. I feel that at some point we will have to revisit protectionism and regulation or face the risk of world conflicts. There is already a bad taste in people's mouths about globalization.

Dubai doesn't have oil like Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is one the largest oil producing countries in the world.

Dubai's main revenues are from tourism, trade, real estate and financial services. Revenues from petroleum and natural gas contribute less than 6% to their economy. Inbound tourism is down. A lot of expats have left.

Abu Dhabi is the stronger of the two.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Etihad absorb Emirates at some point. I think the recent announcement of "cooperation" between the two might be a tip toe in that direction.

Yes, it may be "fugly" but how many airports around the world are going to get that famous monster in and out of the airport daily?? I wonder how many people will be waiting at the Wendy's parking lot on June 1st to see the plane land. I'm sure I'll be there.

Also, I agree with bmc. I can see Etihad absorbing Emirates one day.

Wow! I wish the employees at EK had access to the same level of amazing intel that Air Canada employees do about Emirates operations! lol 650 widebodies eh? Well, seeing as they've scaled back the A380 deliveries back to 7 total through the end of 2010, they're going to have to pick up the pace! Only about another 520 airframes to go!

When i went to buy a ticket for CYYZ - OMDB the price of the ticket was 6500 dollars... economy class.

I hope this is not what they will be charging lol...
