Hey Everybody
Just to let you know if you are having troubles coming up with funding to add additional ratings to your resume in this current economic state, try applying for a training grant through EI. I have payed for my previous training (PPL,CPL, Instructor Rating) by working in the oilfields as a construction labourer the last three winters while I wasn't instructing. But after being laid off after one month in Fort McMurray this year I applied for training through EI and was approved. Anyways just a suggestion.

So where are you planning to spend the free money?

What is the payout? Did they know how much was allowed for the training or did they ask for reference costs from schools? Curious is all.
Money is evil !

A year or two ago, a young pilot I know got a letter from
a company with a twin that said they would consider
hiring him if he had MIFR. UI paid for it.

My situation is a lot like the one Hedley quoted above. As for the money provided, the amount that was quoted by the flight school was allotted, Any remaining monies are refunded to EI.

i oppose this program in any region of canada but i also oppose government subsidized flight training of all kinds except military
i'm just saying that if the citizen is eligible for an existing program then who am i to say that they should not take advantage of it

I think it is only fair that citizens treat the government
with the same ethics and morals that the government
treats citizens with.

is that like an eye for an eye?
to what end then?
how about working to change the system so that it reflects the morals of our society?
i hope that the majority of us don't cheat, steal and lie
shouldn't we vote for, and support, politicians that reflect our beliefs rather then reflect what those in office believe?
if i choose not to take advantage of a government sponsored program that i am eligible for that does not give me the right to infer that everyone else must make the same choice
my freedom of expression does allow me to attempt to inform others of the reason for my decision regardless of my motivations for doing so

I think its great that they are paying for your rating; they spend so much $$ on everything else why not take it and run.

Well.....we all paid for his rating. Glad to see the EI folks will actually let you have some of that money when you need it.

I signed a few letters for guys to get their MIFR over the years .All it said was i would hire them if they got more training that would make them more employable.
But those bastards never came back to work for me ,they went on to higher paying airline jobs the pricks ,i hope they are happy paying all those extra taxes it would serve them right the dirty fookers

i used tax payer's money when i got my GPL and PPL throught the RCAC
i also used tax payer's money when i went to sault college and got my CPL and MEIFR
perhaps i shouldn't have applied for the air cadet scholarships and sault college

That you did not. Those scholarships are funded by the Air Cadet League of Canada. Tax payers money goes to the Department of National Defense, which is then divided up into the budget. Some aids in funding the cadet programs essentials. Such as uniforms, accommodation, food, and other training activities. The flying portion is funded by the Air Cadet League. Likewise with the Air Cadet Gliding Program.

without the support of DND i would not have been able to get my GPL and PPL through the RCAC
without taxes the DND would not exist

Have it know that with the support of DND, this allows for the cadet program to be in place. It does not allow any flying to exist. I get tired of hearing 'tax payers' pay for cadet flight training.
Split hairs all you want. Flying = Air Cadet League, therefore not tax payers.
That aside. I see no issue in someone using the skills qualification upgrade portion of Services Canada/Employment Insurance. This program has been paid into for 3 generations now, and was intended to be shut down once it was self sufficient. The first generation monies made this program self sufficient, however the government deemed it necessary to continue this icing on the cake due to extensive profit margins. Every working Canadian citizen pays into this 'insurance program'/money maker ... I feel strongly that anyone and everyone who has worked, meets the requirements, and paid into this 'program' that steals from the people SHOULD collect when they can, every time they can.

Did you remain active in the Gliding School after you got your license? Did you instruct? Do you go back and fly tow for a while in the summer? If you do any of these, then you need not feel any guilt over taking their money; that's why they gave it to you.

the connection is indirect but the money does trickle into the program. i flew with SOGC for 4 seasons after i got my GPL in trenton in 89'. i tried to make it out every weekend and ended up with over 30 hours which i think is a fair bit given the type of operation. unfortunately i was not accepted into either the instructor or tow pilot programs. i was in RCAC for 6 years as a cadet and OC. i also pursued a career in aviation after i got my PPL in pembroke in 91' so i think this was all money well spent.
