If you were a Canuck with a JAA, would any company out there take you anyway? Or would you need to secure a citizenship somewhere?

If you had a JAA you'd be alright to work in European Union Countries from the licensing point of view.

You would then have to worry about having the right to work in the EU aka citizenship in one of the EU countries.

Most of the operators require JAA + right to work in EU and depending on experience a type rating (low time pilot).
Also many ops require a MCC licence. It is equivalent to LOFT training. It is a certificate that you have been trained on how to work in a 2 crew environment.

If anyone correct me if Im wrong.

What about getting a medical for the JAA license? I have heard that their requirements for a medical are completely different than our simple ECG and sight tests. I searched their website with no luck.

A little off topic, what is the process to Convert a Canadian ATPL to JAA ATPL.

Gustind,

Yea, they do medicals the way it's supposed to be done. No need for you to go through a system of unknowns in Europe. Here in Canada, you obtain your cat 1, become a commercial pilot with the hopes of maybe flying for the airlines one day, only to find out that your drinking parties with your friends back in the days caused your liver enzymes to be screwed up; bye bye airline medical. Or something of the similar.

Not that that has happened to me, but you get my point.

Their medical is closer to the standards of an airline medical.

This link right here is the link for their medical testing and the things they do.

Having a thorough medical done and renewed every year is the way. This way you have a clear understanding of where your health is and how you measure up with respect to aviation standards.

As far as the conversion goes, if you have your Canadian ATPL, they look at your flight hours, see what kind of hours you have and etc. If you have x amount of experience, you don't have to do the checkride.

Regardless if you have to do a checkride or not, you have to complete the following 14 written exams plus a CAA Class 1 medical.

General Navigation
Instruments
Flight Planning
Meteorology
Human Performance & Limitations
VFR Communications
IFR Communications
Mass & Balance
Radio Navigation
Aircraft General Knowledge
Aviation Law
Operational Procedures
Principles of Flight
Performance

I found that http://www.bristol.gs seems to be the best choice because you can learn at your own pace, and at the end of each module, you fly out to England to prep for the exams. They have 2 modules that takes 4-6 months. So you fly out after you completed module 1, prep for the exam, write them, come home. Study up on module 2, fly out, prep for exams, write them, come home with all 14 completed.

2100 pounds for the course
882 pounds for the 14 exams

Then you got to get your Class 1 medical - 700 pounds

And then what ever flying you have to do if your experience is not enough to just do the exams.

I'm not sure about the flying part. Just contact them there at info@bristol.gs and address the email to Noush. She's helpful.

Good Luck

Nope, no more JAA in YQM!!! :D (You'll find the sentiment is shared with most...) I don't remember exactly when they pulled out (it's been a little while now), but it's definately less annoying with them gone.

If you convert to JAA and have your JAA FATPL, does that mean that you no longer can have your TC CPL ? Or could you have two licenses?
