Which is correct?

You gotta love the general public ignorance, reading the comments at the bottom are painful.
One guy says he'll never fly Air Canada again because he flew to Israel in 1999, and he "walked right through Air Canada Security". Another is complaining about the quality of Canadian built planes. Yah, that batch of 767's that came out of downsview sure were lacking.....
wow.

This commend at the bottom of the article gave me a chuckle:

Not related but worth mentioning. When CP took delivery of its first B767, it was unveiled to the media at YVR. It took off and the media were told it was off to do training flights. In reality, it was flown back to Seattle because over 200 snags were identified when the plane was accepted and they didn't want to cancel the media event.sepia wrote:You gotta love the general public ignorance, reading the comments at the bottom are painful.

Please tell me they didn't declare an emergency because of a wonky AP did they? Granted I know jack shit about the big iron but that seems odd to me and is hopefully just media sensationalism. They say they did have fire trucks on standby but who knows. Maybe it's standard procedure for them. I have no idea

Re: Air Canada 767 Emergency Landing CYYZ
I think the only "emergency" here is the fact that only 129 people were on this particular 767! What's a break even load to South America.
What a dumb article, typical of any media outlet I guess.

Re: Air Canada 767 Emergency Landing CYYZ
There isn't much hand-flying on a 767 - its not a fatigued-pilot thing, its a smoothness/accuracy thing.
Believe me, they would not have returned without serious consideration.

"What's it doing now?"
"Fly low and slow and throttle back in the turns."

I don't know the details or the MEL status but no autopilot= no RVSM. I doubt they would descend below FL260 and hand fly for 6 hours.

Re: Air Canada 767 Emergency Landing CYYZ
I had a similar incident years ago in a 767-300.
Departed YYZ-HNL with only 2 of 3 autopilots servicable. (MEL)
Just as we approached the Pacific Ocean, we lost another autopilot. After talking to Maintaince Control we diverted to Vancouver.
(ETOPS rules require a minimum of 2 autopilots. I suppose we might have been legal to continue but the aircraft would have been grounded in HNL so it was just as well we went to YVR.)
On downwind the remaining autopilot started acting up and the flying pilot (Captain) turned off the autopilot. With the autopilot off, the normal electric stab trim also stopped working.
He used the alternate stab trim and landed. It all happened pretty quickly. There really was no time to declare an emergency.
If it had happened farther out, I imagine we would have also declared an Emergency due to Flight Control problems.
