"Just drive'r Sonny!" - The Duck

Post by Mr. North »

I was informed today that the legendary Donnie Graham died last Saturday at his home on McKenzie Island in YRL. He suffered a heart attack and with the ice going out on the lake, medical personnel couldn't get to him in time. In absence of his funeral or the company of friends who knew him, I feel the need to share a memory on here in the hopes that others may share theirs as well.

I flew with the Duck back in '06 while working for Kenora Air Service. It's true he wasn't a very polished man. His appearance was as weathered as the life he lived; yet this guy could really fly an airplane (and fix them too)! I'll never forget the load check I did with him on a trip to pick up some guys claim staking near Sandy Lake. The lake was small for a Beaver, or so I thought. With only a few hours on the DHC2 at that point, I managed to get in but I botched the landing pretty bad. Donnie suggested we switch seats briefly. With Duck at the controls he promptly took off and gave the claim stakers the buzz job of their life; after which he pulled up into a steep climb, pulled the power and kicked the beaver into a hammerhead turn. Now on the precipice of a dive, he dumped all the flaps causing us to hang in our seats with nothing but the lake and trees occupying the entire windscreen. Like that we remained as we floated down to the lake where upon he applied power and rounded out to complete the shortest and softest lading I had ever witnessed... all while smoking a cigarette, with the usual inch of ash hanging off the end. After a few more stops with myself back at the controls we headed home. When I looked over at Donnie he wasn't smoking politely out the window as he often did. No, he was cracking cold beers with the passengers. "Celebrating your beaver checkout sonny, she's all yours now!" was all he said before leaning back and lighting another smoke...

I am very sorry to hear Donnie "moved on" --

I knew Donnie and his dad Slim -- side by side an oxymoron -- Slim the MOT inspector and Donnie the wrench who wanted to fly.

I first met Don in Red lake and he was twisting wrenches for OCA -- the first flight we did together was when he asked me to do a test flight on a Mark iv that Barney had acquired from Joe Amodio - likely for a debit -- The float bumpers were missing and a Mark iv was a nose heavy pig on small floats but fill the front compartments full of water -- well lets say with Donnie up front with me I chickened out on the first try at landing -- Donnie looks at me as says -- well now what -- I looked back at him and said -- get in the baggage compartment and hang on -- I'll never forget that sight of him braced as far back as he could go -- we stopped short but stayed upright -- I guess he had so much fun it wasn't long until he laid down the wrenches and went flying --

A true personality in our industry -- all the best Gramma Duck -- you will be missed.

I heard the terrible news so I thought I should share a quick story about Granny Duck. I Met Duck on the Dock at Kenora, one could immediately tell that this man knew how to fly a plane. The one thing he taught me that I will always remember and still use to this day (other than how to really fly a 185) was when you are backtracking on a lake and considering if you have enough room to climb over the trees, once you think you are good, light another smoke and keep taxing. You will definitely have enough room once the smoke is finished. Thanks Granny Duck rest in peace friend!

Sad sad news. I was lucky enough to meet the Duck last season and put in a little gab time waiting for pax coming out of Coshenour. It didn't take long in conversation to realize you were speaking with one of the last living legends. And he was a heck of a nice guy too.

Met granny in 72 when I hired on with OCA and Barney Lamm. He was a damn good Norseman driver back then and is probably the highest time Norseman pilot in the world. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong. So long old fella. I'm sure you will be remembered many times at the Norseman Festival. Ray

I met The Duck in YRL in 96. I got my first float job at the same float op that he had been at forever back then. Donnie was indeed a "different" kinda guy.. my wife babysat his kids and we got to know another side of Donnie. He taught me alot about flying floats in the season I spent flying with him.. and despite some of his "quirks" he was a gifted float driver.

Sad to hear the news of his passing. My condolences to his entire family. He will be missed comin around the corner of cochenour bay on one float in his -3.

Cheers Donnie!

Red Lake won't be the same without the "Duck". Met Donny in 1974 at Aero Trades. Shortly after that, he was in Red Lake and gave me my Norseman checkout. Smooth driver, never got too excited about anything, except maybe where his next beer came from. Snake Pit gone...Duck gone...Life is too short.

Mr.North, absolutely classic! Thanks for sharing that story, I felt like I was there with you both. Sounds like Duck was a real Canadian classic who left a good impression on you (or any proper float pilot who crossed paths with im). RIP.
