Seaplane bases and fuel between YVR and Anchorage Alaska

Post by kevinsky18 »

I'm interested to know what is the availability of fuel for straight floats, 100LL and Jet, on the coast from YVR to Anchorage.

Where do people usually fuel up along that route?

I was wondering just in general terms. I don't have any definate plans to fly up to Alaska but I was looking at the coast trying to think of places to adventure to and wondered what sort of fuel and services might be available.

One place I do want to visit maybe in the next week or so is Ocean Falls. Anyone been there? It's set a bit back from the main coast line. What's the weather generally like there? I think there is a lodge there that I could call for current conditions. They may or may not know if fuel is available.

A pilot report would be greatly appreciated. Also not on the coast but does anyone know if Nimpo Lake is open yet?

Contact Logan ,he lives in Nimpo lake.if you're planning on visiting during the bcfa annual gathering then Ocean Falls is about an hour or so from there. You could stop at Bella Coola on the way back for fuel if needed.

Ocean Falls has one of the highest rainfalls on the coast...read low cloud, fog etc. Just have to pick your days.
Have a great trip.

I have been to Ocean Falls many times....Always by boat. Boat gas is only available in an emergency. I have not seen any avgas setups there. I would phone around to arrange accomodation as well. Not much activity there any more. Shearwater (Denny Island) has a nice floatplane fuel setup with 100ll and jet. It would only be a 10 min. flight from there to Ocean Falls. After about June 15th the weather starts to get better around there. Before that and after Sept. 15 it seems to just rain, rain, and more rain with some serious winds. When the sun is shining it is some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

I've flown up into Alaska a couple of times. It's super spectacular. Take all your camping gear and your time and have fun.

Google flying and floatplanes and Alaska and find the supplement the Alaskan government provides for private flying around that great state. It's an excellent resource with all the details, frequencies, procedures, pictures, phone numbers, suggestions, etc and best of all, a list of forestry cabins you can stay in for free if I remember correctly. It also has a great back page with 101 uses for airplane parts during a survival scenario after a crash.

I also remember reading that AK has the highest pilot per population ratio in the world. Did you know a firearm is a mandatory piece of your survival kit in AK? God bless the USA, rat tat tat...

Have fun...

I've been to the Falls many times. No fuel available but Bella Bella only 10 min away. There is a good campground in the Falls, but for other accomidation you would have to check around with the lodges that operate during fishing season. There are a couple of nice bed and breakfast places on the Shearwater side of Bella Bella, fuel is also available at Shearwater Marine. Ocean Falls is a neat place to walk around make sure you get up to Link Lk as well. They get some pretty extreme winds up there so if your planning on staying any time make sure your AC is well tied down. In bad winds I wouldn't recomend taking off toward the dam. Have a safe flight.
