I looked into a while ago, but found that there was too much BS involved. You have to attend seminars, interviews, write reports and have meetings with the EI people on multiple occassions.
I have heard of others who have succesfully gotten the funding, but I have no idea if they found a loophole or went thru all that crap.
Just my 2 cents

1 Goto HRDC office to get Information.
2 Fill in the required forms .IT IS A LONG AND DIFFICULT PROCESS!
3Do some research on what you want and why. IE type-rating or license renewal etc.
4Make time to explain to your councillor what aviation is all about,BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE .It doesn' t work like normal industry.
5 Don't GET PISSED AT ANY OF THE COUNCILLORS ,EVER!
6THE system works and has money available for pilot training!
7It worked for me $16000 worth of training, and if you do your homework ,it will work for you.

oh boy..here we go again.....there have been a few (!) threads about this subject on this forum...basically it all comes down to this:
- it varies from person to person
- it varies from city to city
- it depends if the person you get as a "counsellor" knows shit about aviation
- i got 2g for IFR renewal, but was told this NEVER EVER happens and never will again while a buddy got 15G for a type endorsment.
- there have been cutbacks thanks to yo-hos in the HRDC corruption team.
- i have heard of people getting employment/salary compensation from a company in conjunction with HRDC.
- some people think HRDC money is worse than paying for a PPC (different thread altogether)
- some say go for it before the taxman takes everything and the HRDC people spend the money on chicks and blow.
- good luck.
- you will need luck and a whollata patience...those seminars are ridiculous insofar as having any bearing on the aviation industry...
- Now if you want to be a controller, that's a different story...it's a very good story with funding galore.
once again, good luck.

I was just given $20,000 towards a type rating with very little effort required.
At first the proposal was denied, but when I made it clear that there was an offer of employment upon completion, it was granted. Sure there was some legwork involved, but do you expect HRSDC to just hand over that kind of coin without you first justifying the application by putting some effort in first?
Come on in, sign the paperwork and your cheque should arrive in about 3 weeks they told me.
Well that's just great I said.
The way I see it, it's a win win situation. I am no longer a burden on the EI system and once again I am a tax payer.
A few years back I managed to get my multi-IFR rating paid for in the same manner
as I was flying seasonally in the bush and relying on EI benefits in the off season. Once I had that done I was hired full time year round and no longer had to depend on the system. Unfortunately, that position came to an end.
I know this philosophy is controversial in some circles, but I think if these programs are available to us then we may as well make use of them. It's one of the reasons I consider myself to be very fortunate to be living in this great country.

I tried a while back to ge some funding. Just getting laid off another job, and holding a private licence. They took one quick look at the records, and found that there was 2 pilots currently on UI in my town, and they nicely told me where to go. If you have another trade or are skilled in other areas, there is pretty much no chance.
Pay into the fund for years, and thats what you get.

Yup, it depends on who your councellor is, the main one that will help is if you get a letter stating that when you get the said particullar rating that you will be given a interview.
I had this done, filled the paper work out, had a 10 K grant and was in school for my multi-ifr in a one month, of course this was luck, I know others that have done this as well and it has takin a little longer.

One important word of advice if you do receive a large sum of money under the HRDC funding program: be sure to investigate the tax implications! If you are taking the training over two tax years it is often possible to arrange for payment to happen in the year you made (or anticipate making) less money. Funding is considered a taxable benefit and is pretty much added directly to your total income for the year, which could potentially bump you up into the next higher tax bracket.

I got $8000, I took me about 20hrs of my time and several months of waiting but it would have taken me a lot longer to save that much money. Be persistent, it's worth your time to go through the BS to get that much cash.
As far as taxes, it is not considered income like normal EI, they give you a separate tax paper, it won't cost very much at all in tax, if anything.

Stinky, I beg to differ. I received substantially more than that several years ago and speaking from my own experience, it is usually accounted for under the total income section of your tax form - Employment Insurance Benefits T4E. This directly affects your total income and can have the nasty effect of bumping you up into the next tax bracket where you will end up paying a higher percentage of income tax. When EI provides the funding, they usually do provide a warning that the funding is a taxable benefit, but often they don't get too in depth about it. Of course the candidate is feeling so damn lucky to get the funding that they don't consider all the future implications. If you are aware of this fact and you are expecting a lot of money, it may be possible to plan the disbursment so the feds aren't profiting so much on the gift.
Just my two cents,

So what if it puts you into a higher bracket, you only pay the higher percentage on the money above that bracket threshold, so you can't end up with less money in the end.snoopy wrote:This directly affects your total income and can have the nasty effect of bumping you up into the next tax bracket where you will end up paying a higher percentage of income tax.
I went through this, I filled out my tax info and was shocked to find I owed 2000 dollars which I didn't have. I called HRDC and something had been filled out incorrectly. They issued me 2 slips, one for the regular EI payments and 1 for the skills development funding. When I redid my taxes I owed $35.

EI payed for 1/2 of my co-workers mulit-ifr. He produced a letter from our boss stating that he would be re-hired next season if he received that training. He wasn't payed up front but rather received reinbursement when the training was done. This occurred in MB and the training had to be at a authorized school (i.e Perimeter, or Harv's).

Hey Stinky ...I'm in the same boat as you. I received funding from HRDC in the fall, and when I did my taxes this year I owe close to $2000.
Any suggestions on what steps I should take in order to lower this amount?
I'll admit, I know very little about taxes, and the whole process that goes along with it.
Anyone else out there have the same problem with HRDC funding?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I wish I could remember all the details, it was 3 years ago. I do remember that EI sent me two T4's (or whatever they call them) One was for the funding which is taxed at a lower rate.
Since the money went directly to the school the reciept that they gave me was only for the money I spent, not for the portion funded by EI. The correct reciept later issued by the school was for all of the cost . That is what made the difference between 2 grand and what I ended up paying.
I imagine everbodies situation is different, my income was low at the time.
I would definately get a second opinion from somebody qualified before you shell out that kind of cash.

The funny part of this is that the EI grants and funding are supposed to help you out but sometimes in the end come back to kicking your ass at a time when you're looking to get some beer money back. I heard that guys have to pay half of whatever they want to get sponsored for. Yikes, that's alot sometimes when you need that first 707 ppc for a job in Lybia. Really though, if you're on EI and they want half of whatever, then that's alot. Don't read too far into this and expect to get it for free. Just maybe a percentage of the income reported recently.
Everything comes in threes....
