First Step in aviation
Hi, I live around the Pearson Airport in Toronto (YYZ). I'm 18 and looking for a summer job.
I am wondering what are my chances of getting a job at an FBO around YYZ. I am talking about cleaning the airplanes etc...just a job around the industry.
Also what about any of the municipal airports like the one in Brampton?
Thanks

Apply to westjet. Apply on line, and attach your CV. If they like it, they will call you. Dont menition you may leave in the summer. They are hiring like mad there. PM me for more info. The flying benifits are amazing.

I am assuming that you are either a new pilot or want to become one. Working for westjet would be fun but it will never lead to any flying position unless you already have 3000 hrs mostly turbine or multi. You mentionned working at an FBO, that would be better because there will most likely be some smaller carriers based out of them that you might make some contacts with. I would suggest that you go to the airport and look at the equipment the smaller companies are using and then apply to the ones that use C206's, navajos or at the most King air's. You may not be around the bigger more exciting jets ,however if you get on with one of these smaller companies as a ramp guy ect., your chances of getting a flying job with them later on is very good.

I don't know if I would say "never," but certainly not immediately. If you work there, it leads to networking opportunities. Sounds like you are looking for just a summer job locally. Off you go after you got your commercial, flying in the nether regions of Canada, and when you've built the time you probably know some people at WestJet and you hopefully still have a record there as having been a good employee. Plus, you might still have some of your shares in Westjet working for you.richpilot wrote:Working for westjet would be fun but it will never lead to any flying position unless you already have 3000 hrs mostly turbine or multi. .
I wasn't trying to imply anything bad about westjet at all. I like westjet alot and I know that the connections you can make within the company will be usefull down the road (especially because you need internal references to get hired as a pilot). I was just trying to say that for low timers looking for a first flying job down the road, thier time would be better spent with a smaller company rather than a major airline.
Thanks everyone for some good responses. Next year I am going to college (hopefully I get accepted) for aviation. I thaught it would be good if I have a summer job in the industry. I would want to work as a dock hand or something like that for summer, but I would like to find something close to my current house. I guess I will visit all the small operators for any entry level positions!
My original question was, do small operators actually hire for summer positions, I am talking July and August.

There was someone on the island looking for summer help it's probably filed by know but check in the job section. I think it's a great idea you have, burn up your couple of years in non flying jobs when you can't fly anyways. If you can't find something on the island I wouldn't bother with YYZ try up north with someone who also has a lodge you could get a job as a guide (1 day fishing and poof your a guide) or dock hand I've met guys who did this and were in the thousands of hours by their early twenties wish i had done it that way.

Resurrecting a thread from 2004?! Now *that* is back from the dead...
I wonder, though, how the OP got on with his/her job, whether they made it into the college, and is still flying?

If you want to fly... Goto school and get a real proffession.. Ex pharmacist, engineer, plumber, anything really other than pilot. Make money, buy a house, support a wife and kids, then get your private and buy a small plane. Aviation is the lowest return on investment, will bog your life down with massive student loans, will make you move to butt-f-nowhere away from any family and friends, just to start. The industry has no association and hence wages are historically low and going down. Just think about this for a second.... You do all that I mentioned for 5+ years making almost nothing eating off of food stamps, only to get abwestjet encore position with your ATPL license making 36k a year. Do you know who makes 36k a year? A landscaper that has no lives in his hands. Good luck and I hope you make the right call and not because looking like a pilot "looks cool" and "I will meet so many girls" and "I'm like top gun" and "I will be rich" and "my parents will be so proud" etc etc
