An-2
Ineresting, can anyone confirm this?
An interesting note from the pilot's handbook reads: "If the engine quits in instrument conditions (blind flying when you can't see the ground) or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft (it won't stall) and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64 km/h (40 mph), and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground."
The An-2 has no stall speed quoted in the operating handbook. Pilots of the An-2 say one can fly the aircraft in full control at 30 mph. (from Wikipedia) Thanks

Yeah!

Amazing plane. I saw one taking off in Varadero, Cuba. Cool to see a pretty big plane take off like a Cub.

Re: An-2
I heard the procedure was to slow it to 25 knots and then wait for the weather to improve.
even paranoids have real enemies
Re: An-2
Hey Prairie Chicken, can you enlighten us as to
why all the hostility from Transport towards the
AN-2 in Canada?
I've been told it's politically motivated, to protect
domestic manufacturers - is that true?

Now, now Hedley being an aerobatic pilot you should know those Russians don't know how to build a good airplane.
You should be happy TC cares about you.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: An-2
Petty parochialism pisses me off, ., especially
when it is motivated by political interference which
has nothing to do with engineering airworthiness
but rather protecting overpriced domestic manufacturing
jobs.
Aw heck, who cares. While we're at it, why not pour
some more billions of the taxpayer's money into
domestic auto manufacturers whom are sure to go
bankrupt and never return a nickle anyways?

Hey Hedley, I wasn't aware TC were anti-AN-2. So, not sure where you're going with the political motivation issue.

Re: An-2
Not according to all the Transport Inspectorsthe AN2, a lovely aeroplane and very easy to fly. Probably the most safe aeroplane I've ever flown
who testified at the Tribunal how dangerous
it is, and how unsuited it is for Canada.
I get a little tired of the political shenanigans
sometime.
Re: An-2
Really? I got to fly Lee Bakers a couple of times in Oshawa and when he brought it up to Rockliffe this winter. I thought it was a total pussycat. What was so dangerous about it?
The only remotely dangerous thing I saw was the vodka cabinet in the back .. not kidding. That and having to climb the full length of the fuse from tail to nose while 10' off the ground to check the oil in snow

Re: An-2
Pretty clearly, it posed a danger to domestic manufacturers. What was so dangerous about it?
Re: An-2
Well clearly the wrong people are trying to do the importing.
When the Diavik diamond mine was desperate to get cement flown in a couple summers ago, a previously "not suitable for canadian use" russian aircraft, was suddenly allowed to operate.

Re: An-2
didn't Jerry janes own the one that sat at boundary for a couple of years. I remember them reskinning a lot of the thing.. but it sure was neat watching it lumber off afterwards!!
Re: An-2
Right - it's the politics, not the engineering thata previously "not suitable for canadian use" russian aircraft, was suddenly allowed to operate
determines eligibility for airworthiness.
Re: An-2
Now, why is that? Is there some inherent difference aboutYour only allowed 4 people in the AN-2 during flight ops in Canada
Canadian air (is it thinner?) or Canadian gas (is it lower octane?)
that from an engineering perspective would prevent it from
being able to perform the same in Canada, as it does in other
countries?
Or, are Canadians so incredibly fat, that on average they weigh
FIVE TIMES as much as citizens in any other country in the world?
Without changing the subject, do you suppose Chrysler would
like another BILLION dollars of the taxpayer's money?

Jerry has had 2 AN-2s at Blunder Bay and I flew both of them at one time or another and they were quite easy to fly although a bit of a pig in a good crosswind.
One I tagged as "Exxon Valdes III" due to its' habit of marking its territory with large quantities of oil.

In the right hands it is quite an agile aircraft! Have a look at this video.

Re: An-2
The AN-2 in the first video posted by istp, by the way, is registered in Estonia since the Finnish CAA doesn´t allow registering it there due to lack of a western C of A

You have the location right, but as far as jumpers go it has been grounded for years now due to the same legal bullshat as mentioned above.NorthFlyer wrote:There is one outside Westville, NS for jumpers. Nice machine.

Re: An-2
Last I heard, the AN-2 was not type-certificated in the US or Canada. I believe the engine &/or prop is, but not the airframe. Hence the problem.
