Post by Finn47 »

Colgan Q400 landing at Buffalo, right main gear wheel comes off... the other one stays on. Great capture by passenger

terrifying moment
Don't see what was so terrifying about this. This is just another case of media outlets blowing things out of proportion.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

The Q400 seems to have pretty bad luck with its landing gear..

Didn't like how the reporter made it sound like the q400 is a bad airlane and unreliable... maybe its just me.

What are the odds of:

(a) the wheel coming off
(b) someone fixated on filming the landing gear on that particular landing

I thought the FA's were supposed to make sure the passengers have stowed and turned off their electronic gear.

i seem to remember from one of my transport canada junkmailings that the Q400 had/has an issue where it was possible to torque the wheel and it still be loose on the axle, the bearing grease retainer could be 'misplaced' and fall between a shoulder on the axle and and the wheel nut, the wheel then beats the axle to death until it fractures at the threads, thereby causing exactly what the video shows

having never touched a Q400 i am not sure, but the q100 and 300 have 2 lockwired bolts through the axle into the anti skid transducer to safety the nut, so the cotter pin theory probably won't hold water (brakes seem attached by the same method though, the wheel holds them on 2 big locating pins)

pilot probably only got an antiskid inop caution light

my 2 cents

and i remember horizon being broken down in Calgary regularly 6 years ago

Gotta love the media getting it "right"... like this brilliant expert here:

smoke, small parts and a right landing gear flew off the wheel assembly

I've had 2 wheels come off due to bad bearing/seized brakes one they found on the runway, the other half off the hub, that ruined the gear due to rubbing the rim against the stanchion?

Here they go again...the Media that is. Have any of the "EXPERTS" chimed in yet? You know the ones who build model airplanes and spit when they talk, and this of course makes them all Pilots and Engineers. The Dash 8 is going to get a bad wrap. Bombardier was supposed to be sued over the Buffalo crash right off the bat because some "EXPERT" said it had poor anti icing. How long have these things been flying? Anyway, I hold the Media responsible for the Swine Flu getting out of hand, and even the recession getting worse than it should have been. They are idiots. How about reporting the number of successful flights in a given year?

Good thought, but you know no one would ever report nor read that info!
