commercial pilots and CARs
Questions frequently come up here from CPLs asking can I do this, what are the requirements for that, what do I have to do to get this conversion, etc.
Now, a PPL asking for some help with the CARs is one thing, but a commercial pilot? Come on, these are the rules that govern your livelyhood. At least know where to go to find the information, if you don't understand it, fine. They use tricky wording, I get that, I struggle to understand them at times myself. But I at least know where to look to find the information. Not to pick on the guy in the flt training forum asking about converting a CPL(H) to (A), but if you already have one CPL and wish to hold another, you should know how to get through the CARs that pretain to the license you wish to hold and the rules underwhich you fly (most recent example, that's the only reason I bring him up).
Why is this such a problem for commercial pilots???

The training industry is turning out a poorly trained product? Why is this such a problem for commercial pilots???
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Some people are just too lazy to find the answer on their own.

Would they then not be considered " Professionals "?Some people are just too lazy to find the answer on their own.

Re: commercial pilots and CARs
All too frequently back in the days when I was actively doing PPCs and other rides, I'd ask a
standard run of the mill question and instead of getting the anticipated answer, have the
misfortune of watching the candidate fumble through the reference material from back to front,
page by page, skipping from one unrelated section to another even less related area, to and fro
through the material ... bamboozled ... oblivious that reference books have a thing called an
index.
Use it ....it really can be that simple.

Was that the crew that went off the end of the runway?

Re: commercial pilots and CARs
I don't think it is fair to pick on CPLs who are maybe not well versed in the CARs, when some of the people who are making and enforcing the regulations don't understand them either.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: commercial pilots and CARs
im not talking about understanding, im talking about just knowing where to go to find the information...deciphering it is a seperate task
but, for example, shouldn't a CPL know that he needs to look in part IV to find out what the requirements for the ATPL are?

Re: commercial pilots and CARs
Maybe people are having trouble finding the information on TC's website.
Until I figured out that you use Google rather than the Site Map or search function, I've gotten a lot better. Still had a heck of a time trying to find an AOC listing this morning though...

Re: commercial pilots and CARs
Tim, if they're not smart enough to avoid paying for their jobs, do you really expect them to know how to look up something in the CARS??
Re: commercial pilots and CARs
it can be hard to get to the CARs page, but once ON the CARs page, its fairly striaght forward...to be honest though, that isn't much of an excuse to me. hard or not, its our job to know what they say, or at least where to find it.iflyforpie wrote:Maybe people are having trouble finding the information on TC's website.

google is a good one too, it's how i search the AIM usually. the TC search is usless, ive never found what i was looking for by using it.
frankly, yes i do expect people to be able to look these things up (hence the rantDoc wrote:Tim, if they're not smart enough to avoid paying for their jobs, do you really expect them to know how to look up something in the CARS??
Re: commercial pilots and CARs
In your journey from PPL to CPL do you need your flight school to teach you how to use the CARs, or can simple internet literacy do the trick? I don't think lack of CARs knowledge is a flight school flaw unless google searches are something we should now cover in ground school?
