Question for those other instructors out there, what is dress code at your school and does the school supply the uniform?

Just wondering if it is the norm to be told what to wear but not have it provided, those pretty white shirts add up at $25 each at aviationworld.

Not to mention the epaulets. Captaining those Cessna's is quite impressive!

Golf shirts, provided by the school.

At every school I ever taught at, whatever was required to be worn was provided at no cost.
When I flew 703, same thing, you got a stack of white shirts, black pants and the epaulets during training (which you returned when you left).
Ironically, after making it to a proper airline, I have to pay for 50% of my uniform costs.

If the company requires you to wear a uniform, I think they're required to provide/pay/reimburse you for some portion of the cost.

I was provided a few polo shirts with the school's logo, but wearing them wasn't mandatory as long as I had a shirt or a polo shirt on. The only other dress rule I recall was no jeans.

Now I'm on a DZ and I could probably get away with worn out rock band t-shirts and a mullet if I wanted.
Only rule we have for pilots here is long pants and closed shoes (in case of a fuel spill and cabin fire safety).

Head to toe is provided here.. shirts, shorts, epauellets, hats and even the belt with fancy company buckle. Oh and it's all custom tailored to each pilot.

A lot is to be said about the way a company treats its employees...

Make sure anything next to your skin is cotton ,silk or wool.Nomex flight suits are great if you can afford to replace them after six washes ,otherwise any cotton clothes will give you a better survival chance after any fire .
Never wear any fabric close to your skin that melt and may cause infection in any burns you may get.You may survive the fire but die from infections from the melted fabrics burned into your skin.

When I was doing Cadets it was white shirt provided by the company, black pants on your own, black shoes and a black tie. No epalites was kind of nice.

When I was a weekend warrior it was just a collard shirt, closed shoes, clean jeans where OK, not the ones you used to fix your 1985 Civic the night before. IIRC somewhere in the labour laws if you are required to wear a uniform.

As for who pays depends where you live, in BC for example the clothing is to be provided at no charge. In AB you have to pay for it. Are flight schools covered under the Canadian Labour Code? Or Provincial?

I'm CFI at an FTU right now - not that there was any
free will involved.

On any given day, I'm lucky if I'm wearing clean underwear.

I prefer to wear a tshirt and bathing suit when I'm flying,
especially airshows.

To break the ice, I like to wear tshirts with funny messages
on them. Right now, I am wearing a shirt that says

Daddy drinks because you cry

today,
worn out jeans with large-ish holes as well as the odd oil and mustard stain, a bud light t-shirt, 4 or 5 days of facial hair and crocs.. thats a good day. sometimes its just sandals, swim trunks and a tassel of a tshirt.

Now there is a tool for motivating a student to learn quicker....you like the smell son? We will just keep practicing until you get it right..oh,,,and close the air vents.
