Secret Snowbird Location! [pics]

Post by RyanF »

Hey guys, I'm new around here. figured I'd post up some pictures of a flight I took today with a friend in his C170 out of Oshawa. I think there is around 8 of the CT-114's. Sorry for the poor picture quality, only had the cellphone with me!

I'll give the location of the place later, I'm curious to see if anybody else is familiar with the location.

Heres the C170 that we flew to the field in.

No secret military location, it's all privately owned. It's not Mountain View either.

That is really neat. Only seen Tutors parked like that at Markham and Mountain View. Not sure of this one!

It's a private strip about 3 miles north east of the Norwood airport. It's not listed in the CFS or shown on a VNC.

It's privately owned and it's been around for close to 4 years now. Owner also has a Yale at a nearby airport.

Watch out for the power line on the crossing runway. It doesn't run across the approach; it actually runs across the runway about 30' down! Hard to see as the poles blend into the trees along the road.

Yeah, we noticed those but that runway was closed off as the ground was pretty soft. The other runway (04-22 I'm guessing) has power lines but they are underground through the approach portion.

Were they minus engines and electronics?

I suspect the wings were removed, the planes trucked in and then reassembled?

How much would those have been auctioned off for? Any guesses?

We think a few had engines in them, most did not though. Most had the majority of the avionics and ejection seats. Only one looked to be entirely complete.

With private ownership, and all those Tutors parked outside, it's all really mysterious.

Did you see anything inside that hangar?
What was in there? Was it the Arrow that got away? Did you get pictures? Huh? Huh?

A friend of mine swapped his DH Vampire for a CT-114 a few years ago but with the price of fuel these days , he doesn't fly it very much. It is in the original "RCAF" markings and based in Seattle.

A friend sent me a link to this thread adn after reading it, I just had to register to reply.

There are no Tutors at Markham only Mountainview is the disposal site for the Tutors in Ontario. There are afew up at CFB Borden as training aids and these are rotated back through Mountainview from time to time.
These Tutors are all owned by one fellow who has plans to make one fly again and paint the others as snowbirds. There are no engines fitted in any of them when acquired. I saw all of these in person at Mountainview shortly after they had been sold. Some have 100% complete cockpits which was amazing to see. There were two rounds of sales of Tutors to Interested Museums in Canada. The remaining airframes are being cannibalised for parts and the remains cut up and carted away. I feel the Canadian Govt and DND are missing out on an opportunity of selling cockpit sections as projects to interested people.

They look like the ones that belong to name deleted by Lil. He purchased them through the CAPA program that gave member aviation museums first crack at the surplus Tutors. He was trying to sell one on Ebay a while back, IIRC the opening bid was $85K USD.

I saw that 170 in Oshawa today for the first time.
Ironically I had just returned from checking out those snowbirds (didn't land).

Also, I wish I had checked the above link and gotten the coordinates prior.
Would have been allot easier.
