Stay away from Big Salmon Air the boss is a scum bag (I used to work for him). other than that the flying is great when you do fly but the area is pretty dead most of the mines are shut down, so if your a 200hr wonder stay away most places need experianced pilots, but if you got the hours go for it its a great town to live in and people in the Yukon are pretty laid back

Air North has traditionally hired low time locals off their ramp. They look for people who plan to make it a long term stay there. To my surprise, they recently advertised for pilots right here on AvCanada. The guy who I knew there seemed happy, and Dan Quail, their chief pilot, seems like a nice guy.

For the longest time the Yukon's aviation industry was in a slump. I don't know if much has changed. Whitehorse is a fairly nice city, livable city.

From the folks I talk to at Alkan they are pretty satisfied with there jobs. Dont know how many hours they drive on average. Whitehorse is a pretty decent town for the north (shit its got a WalMart) and alot of people go there and never leave. Most places require some good time to fly around there and its really an old boys network.

Alkans has the Medivac contract which was given to them untendured and with no experation date on that contract. (the Minister is a good buddy of one of the owners) so I think there King Airs are pretty safe. Not sure about how they hire.

Air North I think is partly owned by one of the local Native groups so its fairly secure job. As far as low time pilots go they hire off the ramp or from within I dont think they hire from outside all that often for flying positions.

All the posters are correct, even Galaxy (Whitehorse is pretty warm considering...)

The only misinformation was from .. ., Alkan currrently has the contract for medevacs that is tendered every three years. Last time it came for tender was two years ago.

Don't confuse lack of other bids as "untendered".

Alkan Air looks for pilots with at least 1000 hours total time.

What i heard was there wasnt a time limit or duration on the contract which I dont have a problem with because everywhere else peopel low ball each other with the medivac contracts and end up screwing everyone over
