EASA ATPL Licence conversion / harmonization

Post by righthandman »

I have been trying to get an answer to this for some time and now it has come in. NOT, the answer I was hoping for but at least it is quite clear. Others have been wondering about this and I received this response to a question I posed a while ago... today.

Thank you for writing to Transport Canada regarding our efforts toward establishing a more streamlined licence conversion process with the European Aviation Safety Agency, (EASA).

You are correct, there were efforts to build a more streamlined licence conversion process with the Joint Aviation Authority. Subsequently, when that organization folded into the European Aviation Safety Agency, our progress in this area slowed considerably.

Both Transport Canada and our counterparts in EASA intend to pursue an agreement in this area, to date however we have been unsuccessful in establishing a timeline in order to finish this work.

Regrettably, we are unable to provide you with any more information regarding this initiative or any sense of when an agreement would be in place. Our recommendation would be to not base any decisions you are considering on the conversion being in place in the near future.

Good luck in your future endeavours.

Righthandman,
I don't know what your discipline is but BCIT in Vancouver is offering the EASA exams and if you have the experience you can challenge these exams and get your EASA license.

I think it's the only place in North America that does this. I've talked to many Americans that have flown to Vancouver and done this.

If you look up EASA Part 66 on the internet you will find the requirements and subject matter for the Modular exams. There's between 12 and 13 exams depe3nding on which discipline :D

NeverBlue... thanks for that reply. I guess I should make it clear my answer from TC was with regard to obtaining the ATP License. I am a pilot wishing to live and work in Europe.

I converted my JAA a couple years back. There is no conversion per say, you just have to treat it like you are a canadian student, however, all your hour requirements will be complete. Write the CPL written, then do the flight test with a TC examiner. They'll want to see your log book as well to check that the same minimum hours that they require have been completed. Pretty simple process really.

I don't think any thing has changed going to EASA. Good luck

By the way, where did you complete your JAA license, and how much did it cost?
