Olympic Torch

Post by midwingcrisis »

How is the "torch" transported by air with passengers on board? Just curious.

It's not really the 'torch' that is being transported - the torch is simply a mode of transport for the flame therein. The idea is, the flame, lighted by the sun atop Mt. Olympus in Greece, is transported to the particular Olympic games, where it burns over the duration of the Olympic Games. In the case of Vancouver 2010, it looks as if the flame is transported in a simple miner's lamp, and then transferred to a torch when they need to run around with it..

Perhaps the question is then, can one have a "lit miners' type lamp" on board a commercial aircraft in Canada?. I saw the CAF Airbus haul it across the the pond, perhaps they can....but now to be taken across the Yukon and NWT by commercial aircraft. Bombardier engineered I may ad.

I agree. All it needs is a Bic to spark it back up. It's a bloody HUGE looking doobie!

I saw 4N's 737-200 GNAU sitting on the ramp for a 0300 departure for the YT. Is it flying all across Canada? Good on ya 4N for getting the business..

However, gotta say..I think these Olympics will be more cost than anything else..

Also discussed a bit here:

AvCanada: 2010 Olympic Torch Relay: Who's flying the torch?

For those who missed the CTV segment on Friday night, they did a short piece onboard the CC150 that shows lamps, and the cradles that they travel in, secured to the passenger seat. This is the method used to transport the flame on board all of the aircraft that are taking part in the relay:

No, NAU takes it as far as YXY.

C-GANV, the gravel-kitted '200 Combi will do the rest of the trip from YXY on.

Edited with itinerary update:

HS-748, C-FCSE will take the torch and some of the entourage to Dawson City, (YDA) and Old Crow, (YOC). C-GANV will take it and the full load of pax from there.

EDITED in reference to the bitching about how much this all costs:
Nearly everything to do with aviation in this country is subsidized heavily by Big Bro. From Air Canada at the trough every 3 years to STL fling-winging biologists all over the arctic studying the cumquat count in hemaphrodite moose piss, there's lots of gov'y money keeping us all afloat. You can all take solice in the fact that if 4N has this job, it went to the low bidder. 8)
