Air Tindi ?

I was wondering if anyone could tell if Air Tindi is a decent employer? I was recently offered an apprentice job there. What is yellowknife like to live in?

I am also looking for information on Transwest Air in saskatoon/PA. I have offers from both Air tindi and transwest for apprentice positions ( for which I am extremely grateful). Saskatoon is a lot closer to home, but transwest is starting me at a lower wage for the first six months. How is the management at either company? Benefits? Equipment/Facilities ? This is a really hard decision to make, I don't want to move to yellowknive and then quit six months after. I would like to stay at the same company for at least a couple years. PM me if necessary. I like yellowknife, never lived there but it is a good town with lots of young people and lots of aviation jobs. If one dosn't work out then you should be able to cross the ramp and try again. I also have no clue about the current affairs of Air Tindi.
Saskatoon is Canada's best kept seceret and there are some good engineers at trans-vest(ite) that you will learn from. They do run a 7-7 shift so that you will either love or hate. In your position, just starting out, I don't think either will be a bad decision. I would go to Yellowknife if I were starting again. Good luck. PM me if you would like more info.

My only thoughts on Transwest is stay out of PA if you can. Usually crawling with Boss types. One of the Co owners lives there too. For what its worth I liked the city of Saskatoon(In the summer at least) Send me a PM if you want details.

Stay out of PA?? As far as TW goes, I have been told that is THE base to work at. The base in YXE is full of good engineers, but only 2 Jetstreams and the SAAB, and recent word is that any and all parts ordered have to be approved by the owners first, and they have very little knowledge of the maintenance side of aviation and an unrealistic grasp of what it SHOULD cost to keep a fleet airworthy. If I were you, I would head for Tindi.

If that's what's going on there, stay the hell away. I've worked for outfits like that before, and that sort of structure is usually a indication of a company on the edge financially.

The owners having to approve parts on order is fairly standard at this time of year. Supposedly cash flow sucks until float season gets rolling, so all the bills get run out to the max.
The crack about PA was not in regards to the A/C just that it always seemed to have too many chiefs not enough indians.

If you have a chance to work for Tindi, do it. Yeah its a small town, but the summers are awesome, winters are long and cold, but its all worth it!

I have worked around yellowknife at a few differednt companys, the pay is good and the variaty of aircraft from DC-3s, dash 7s, buffalos, atr 42s 737s twin otters Etc. so theres is alot of work. BUT Yellowknife is a major shit hole, eveyone lives in trailers or apartments and eextreamly exspensive. true very nice summers, but long ass winters and i mean long. so if you are freash out of school and looking for experiance you will deffinatly get it in yellowknife. Air tindi is a good company to work for but they pay alot lower then the surounding companys. so there is companys such as summit air, arctic sunwest, buffalo airways first air adelair, great slave helicopters. so try some of thease places they are always hiring. hope i was some survice to you.

TCAS
As most of us know Transwest was formed by the joining of La Ronge Av and Athabaska Av whos owners formed their respective companies about 1955 and 1960 so I'd suspect these guys were making maintenance decisions long before most of the people on this forum were born.

I live here in Yellowknife, 11 years now. Tindi is a good company but they jealously guard their employees without giving them incentives, meaning a good return on their services to the company. They will treat you with respect but as for all people who come to Yellowknife, if you find that your wage in Yellowknife is the same or lower than in the south then you made an mistake by coming this far north to look for work. Yellowknife's housing index (there is a public website for this) shows that the cost of living up here are about 50% higher than in the south. The wages are not. So, people who live here are actually rather poor comapared to the the southern counterparts in terms of dollarvalue income. If you make 20.00 in Emonton as an AME you would make 10.00 dollars per hour if you were to get the pay of our Yellowknife companies. Minus taxes, minus isolation, etc. Yeap, we are just up here because there is work here. And nope, nobody here is stupid. Just have 3 jobs on the side so we can get really tired really soon and always be the laughing stock for the few who don't work nights, etc.
