Attaching cover letter or sticking it in the email message ?
Hello,
I read the sticky on cover letters/ resumes. A couple of questions for anyone that wouldnt mind helping.
When I am emailing my resume to a company, do I write a little blurb in the message and then attach both resume and cover letter? Or do I put the cover letter in the email message and simply attach my resume?
Also I find it neater having my resume sent as a pdf file? Is this preferable (although much bigger in size to download)?
Finally I also heard that any emails with attachments go directly to junk mail due to the possibility of them containing viruses... now does this mean I should copy paste both cover letter and resume into my email, with not attachments ?
Cheers & Thanks in advance for the appreciated help

Re: Attaching cover letter or sticking it in the email message ?
Not sure how right it is but I send my cvr in the body of the email and attch the resume as a word program. I have seen a few job postings that have stated to only send as word and that any other forms would be junked.
Again I may not be doing it right as I am still looking too, maybe one should attch the CVR and make the body of the email more personal??? . . . ANY THOUGHTS ???

Anyone can do it, I just do it better ! ! !

I posted my cover letter in the email, and then attached my resume as a separate file. I went this route because I can do a short highlight all my skills and hours in the body of the email which they see right away. It got me job offers at 3 separate companies.
Also, in the email subject line, I include my name, hours and job applying for (ex. Joe Smith, 2000 TT - Lear Jet F/O Application). That way they instantly see who it's from, get an idea of their experience and know what the email is about rather than having to download and open documents.

Yes, IMHO that's the best method.

I had a CP tell me once he couldn't open my attachment, so from then on I cut and pasted it into the body of the e-mail as well as attaching it. The fonts and line spacing get all messed up so a little editing is required, but then you're covered. I use Ubuntu instead of Windows so I also have to double check that doc's are saved under the correct extension.

Crazy idea. Why not do both!! Post the cover letter in the body of the email and attach it as a separate file. Good idea to post the basics in the subject line.

I like the idea of posting the summary on the subject line, and agree with the idea of attaching the cover letter as a Word file but also pasteing it into the e-mail body.
Another idea I have heard on is to give an "executive summary" of your experience in the e-mail, but on the top portion so that any reader can see it without having to scroll down. This is the "bait" that keeps him/her from trashing it immediately.
Good luck in your job search!
