Pilot walks away from Avanti P180 out of fuel accident . . .

Post by robbreid »

N108GF crash-landed on the inland ice (Greenland) on Oct 16/09, after bad weather forced it to change course and land at an alternate airport.

The Piaggio P180 propeller plane en route from Iceland was unable to land at Narsarsuaq Airport. It was instead forced to change course to Kangerlussuaq Airport, some 750km to the north-west.

The plane touched down 60km outside Kangerlussuaq, rolling over on impact, and was destroyed.

Rescue crews reported, however, that the pilot (sole person on board) suffered only minor injuries and was able to walk away from the plane.

ASN crash report

The Avanti was based in Saudi Arabia for charter company Golden Falcon. Accident photos tell the story better . . .

Don't think there's any point in that, he's used up all of his luck.

Cheers,

All I can say is WTF -- his brains were up his ass -- for those of us who have been to BGBW you certainly never go with the idea of landing and alternates must be solid - it would be interesting to know if Nuuk was good -- short but I watched a G2 land there so I'm sure the P180 could do it --

This stuff is more common than one would think in Greenland -- the Greenland Air guys have some very interesting stories to tell - especially the fling wings - why do you think their response time is so good. A hard core group of professionals.

Yes good he survived -- hopefully a wiser man for it.

Sort of reminds me of the Goose accident on Thormanby Island when they asked the guy how he got out of the airplane. "I just stood up and I was already outside". I can't believe that someone walked away from that accident.

Looks like that is one strong aircraft. I noticed how it broke into three main pieces. I'm sure the design must have played a great role in his survivability as well.

Miracles do happen in aviation sometimes. Remember the guy that survived the crash of his cargo beech 18 when it went down right after takeoff back in 2007?

That is Ft. Lauderdale pilot Bob Robertson sitting in the remains of the Monarch Air Beech 18 N123MB, after the accident, he ended up getting married, and started flying a passenger Caravan out of KFLL. As for the accident, he has since made a full recovery, though occasionally suffers tightness in his right arm and leg, One lucky guy though!!!

FAA accident report, listed pilot error as the probable cause.

Yikes! He had a lucky horseshoe up his butt for sure. Anybody remember a similar accident with a Sabre that went in east of Frobe, oh, must have been about 1974 or so? I seem to remember the guy also ran out of fuel inbound from Keflavik.

Blows me away that some people survive accidents like these 2, while other die from falling off a ladder.

Siddley Hawker;

That was the Brethour Realty Sabreliner 40A CF-BRL that was based in the Skycharter hanger.

'The Sabreliner corporate jet had departed from Stuttgart, Germany on a flight to Toronto, Canada. Intermediate stops were planned at Shannon Airport (SNN), Ireland, Keflavik (KEF) and Frobisher Bay Airport, NU (YFB). Last contact with the flight was when the pilot radioed that he was 30 miles southeast of Frobisher Bay with about 15 minutes of fuel in the tanks. The airplane was later found to have impacted a rocky hillside some 66 miles from Frobisher Bay.'

Loss of life 9, date Feb 27 1974.

I remember that accident - as I can recall he was unable to pickup (likely due WX) the frob beacon and we always figured he descended early and never picked up the VHF Nav - a few years latter I discovered that when coming from Greenland to Frob the Frob beacon frequency was interfered by European commercial broadcast on the same frq - it cut the effective range down to less than a hundred miles when coming from the east -- likely not a factor but an interesting side bar - back in the day to only reliable navigation equipment was our radar.
