English Proficiency Test Vancouver (YVR-CZBB)?

Post by KC49111 »

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive examiner for the test in Vancouver/Boundary Bay? The best price I've found so far is about $100 at CFC. Thanks.

You are being ripped off at $100.00, the average Ontario rate is $50.00.

Probably true. 2 other major schools quoted closer to $150. I'd prefer to put the money towards flying.

I think I paid $50 here in YYJ...still absurd but not as much as you're gonna have to pay I guess.

you pass. clearly you can read / write english. my english test consisted of a 5 min conversation with my cfi for $50 at yqm. $100 is the norm apparently for the west coast which is just stupid. Go to CFC - its a good place. dont go to montair  they will tell you how terrible a pilot you are even though you are just sitting on the ground.

I received a good piece of advice from a forum member. Since the test is by phone you can use any examiner on the Transport Canada list http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/gener ... tm#ontario ,even if it means a call from BC to Ontario.

I recommend Christine Forgac in the Ontario section for a very trouble free test at a reasonable rate.

If the test can be done by phone how do the testers confirm the identity of the person on the other end of the phone?

Is this English test for new foreign applicants or does this apply to all applicants?

I believe its applicable for all PPL students. Even though I am from another country, I have been in Canada for a good 8 years. I went through high school, and speak English on a regular basis..I still had to take it :|

Is it just me or doesn't this "test" seem rather redundant. When you get your radio licence would you not have to do it in either English or French? Who dreams up this garbage?

The thing that pisses me off is the fact that the "imported" students are turned loose solo and most of them are totally unintelligable over the radio. In my other life in ATC, there were many times when I was unable to get one of these people to respond with anything except "Roger" to any request. There is something very wrong with a system that tollerates this type of operation.

While in the RCAF/CAF ATC system I dealt with Nato students from a great many counties and they were required to be capable in English before solo...not before wings grad!

Very true, but how did they get their radio license then? I thought you got that before solo, but I could be wrong. This language proficiency test seems to be a money grab.

In order to get the solo license
One needs to complete the prerequisite exercises in the PTR,
have a Valid CAT1 or CAT3 Medical,
write the PSTAR, Radio Op., do the English Examination and,
have a certain number of flying hours?

I had to cough up $100 to speak English...
WHAT WORLD IS THIS?!!?!?!!

Can't they make them just talk to a TC inspector or CFI from another school before writing the PSTAR? I mean it's not hard to figure out what level of English a person have from a simple conversation. $100 really sounds like a cash grab. Then again when I was back in HK for the CX cadet interview, some people can't carry a simple conversation in English and these people suppose to have "oversea" university degrees.

I know when I did training for being able to provide this test, every single one was done by phone. That way, no body language is noticed. It's one of the main points to the test.

We were also told that everyone needed to take it.....(maybe so non English as a first language students were not singled out?), and that it was up to each examiner to determine what to charge. Most of the people in my class chose $50. Mostly for the time it takes, although it's not a lot of time.

I do think $100 is a bit much.

If you want ICAO ATPL you need to pass the English test and you need at least a 4 or 5 out of 6 on the ranking to hold an ATPL license. If I recall correctly, a friend I met at CX cadet interview end up completing both verbal and written English test for ICAO even before CX paid for his flight grading. Basically, you must have the Level 4/5 English or you be stuck flying domestic using native language. This really makes me wonder who those guys from Montair can fly international later on? They won't let you have translator in the cockpit anymore, as far as I know.

Check out schools at Langley or Pitt Meadows. I think there are examiners there that charge about 50 bucks.

That's just it, they are not all flying internationally, but rather domestically in China so what language do you think they will be using over there? I agree though some may get on and become international later and therein lies the problem.. They will have to complete the english proficiency..

When I did my test cause I was working overseas at the time, I had someone who's first language wasn't English administer the test for me. It basically was a 10 minute conversation. I wasn't pissed at having to do it, but come on at least get someone who's primary language is the one your testing for!!

However the rub of it all is that TC just stamped my license as English Proficient without requiring the test because I worked for an operator in Canada, which arrived about 2 weeks after the test overseas!!!!
