Received my license today - What the hell man?!

Post by niss »

November 16, passed my flight test, took my passport photos and submitted my paperwork to get my license.

Today I receive the old paper style license on blue stock with a warning attached that my paper license will expire soon and I need to apply for a Aviation Booklet.

I thought that was what I did in the beginning!

I wouldn't worry about it. In over 22 years I have been asked for my licence twice. Once doing my multi IFR from the MOT and once by the FAA when I got my American licence.

You'll get the booklet in a few weeks. I applied for my CPL, IFR and Aviation Document at the same time and got my PPL with IFR on the old style, then Document, then the sticker for my CPL and an old-style licence, for some reason. Either way, it's just as good.

Except at some clubs that like to see your licence/medical each time before they hand you the keys at dispatch.

The last time I rented a plane the guy asked me if I was current, this was over the phone. I said yes and told him what I was flying and he told me where to find the keys in the plane. He said he saw me flying more often than anyone else at the airport. Before that it was at Fort Mcmurray and I only had to fill out a flight note when I was coming back with the plane. Mind you I used to work on his planes before they got their own AME.

you wouldnt worry about a legal requirement on the grounds that you've only had to show it twice?

Why would I worry? Or for that matter any one else. Maybe I should blow it up on a photocopier and paste it on the window of my house. Are you serious?

And such are the circumstances that a relatively new pilot at a busy flight school/club will not encounter.

Would it be safe to say, in your opinion, that it's your sort of trust and reputation that each person, not only as a pilot, should try to build for themselves?
I would believe so.

Man, everyone is getting so bloody paranoid nowadays they question why someone else isn't the same. If a school/club doesn't ask for something the problem lies with them. It is the bloody log book people look at, allthough that in itself would be subject to interpretation.

Ouch.. never thought I'd be thought of as a paranoid person in this respect.

I didn't agree or disagree with schools/clubs checking licences. Just a point I made to show that yes, you do need to worry a bit if you didn't get the new licence if it was your situation.

My only grievance is your post that I  'd at.

It's not a matter if you're the same as the rest of us.. or maybe it is. The "rest of us" are concerned if one doesn't worry about a valid licence because they've rarely had to produce it.
I shouldn't have to worry about keeping a valid driver's licence with me when I drive, since I've driven for XX years without being pulled over. (Where I'd be asked for my licence.)

Fact is that you're required to be in possession a valid aviation document with your respective licences inside. (That beautiful little blue book.)

[By the way, the last point in my second post in this thread (about trust and reputation) wasn't sarcastic if it happened to come across that way.]

Cheers

Valid pilots license??

There is a record in TC that I have held two different pilots licenses for many decades, these licenses are kept valid by having a current medical that meets the standards of the licenses and I can produce evidence of currency.

Any change of format with regard to these licenses do not invalidate the fact that I am properly licensed, or does it?

Well, you're still licenced... but the document you have can't prove it, "officially" at least, since it is invalid. [The one on blue stock-card]

You mean my paper license is no longer valid.....I thought they had extended the time frame to get that new abortion they designed?

To this day I have not been told officially that I need this new pilots licence. Sure I know about it, and I have gotten it unfortunately, but I think it is quite possible for someone not to know about it.

I stand corrected.. TC website tells me midnight June 30th..
Air Traffic Controller and Flight Engineer licences along with Private, Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot Licences in the old format must be replaced by the Aviation Document Booklet by midnight on June 30, 2010. Only holders of a valid new Aviation Document Booklet, will be able to continue to exercise the privileges of their licence.

You can thank COPA in large part for this. They told TC to give their collective heads a shake in that people are not going to rush right out and spend money on a pertty picture of themsleves fill out forms etc, etc, just to get a new version of a document that is perfectly valid. Luckily TC didn't make us pay for the entire process.

The general concensus among private pilots on this is to go pound sand. Even when they change your driver's licence format they only impose it on your when it's time to renew. Wait and see what happens in June. I'll bet a lot of folks still won't have their new little booky thingies.

So if you are found to be flying with your old format license after June 30/10 what exactly will they do about it?

Fine you?

Jail you?

Taser you?

Kill you?

Do you get a new license number on that abortion you are going to be forced to get, or will your old number be on it?

Same number huh?

What happens if you don't have the new abortion next year and you get your medical, if they are using the same number how do they determine if you applied for their new abortion or not?

Oh by the way I have seen the new license and it is hideous not only in the size of the thing but it looks like something you would give to a kindergarten class to paste their good behavior stars in.

I'm hoping it goes the way of the gun registration fiasco and if we wait long enough it will go away.
