The end of the pilot profession
A prior post about UNDs unmanned program got me thinking. I personally do not think we will see un-manned commercial jets for many more years. Based on my personal opinion of how un-safe I would feel riding a 300 pass jet over the Pacific with no one controlling the billion line of code computer program. Also taking into account the average life of a jet exceeds 20 years, and not one single aircraft being planned for Airbus or Boeing calls for such technology (that I know of). Even if Airbus announced tomorrow their A390 would be un-manned, it would take 10+ years of design and development, and even longer to work its way into the industry.
What do you think?

There's no way they haven't got a pilotless, or at least single pilot/monitor design contingency planned for the A380 already.
We're killing people a world away with drones, it's already here. And to ya'll who'll jump on the "people won't get on a plane without pilots" argument, the only people more willing to whore themselves to get on an airplane more than pilots, are the paying passengers. Make it cheap enough and they will ride. Set yer ego aside for a moment, and see the light! Lmfao I already have a back-up career planned - house husband.

I have scary vision of the next gen terrorists. A keyboard and a joystick. Guess they won't be getting into that beautiful heaven with unlimited sex and money.

So you wouldn't pay an extra $10 or so on your $315 ticket in order to have two pilots up front in case it hits the fan (pun sort of intended)?

Nope. I am a sheep.
And if the government says it's safe, it is. I want a discount on my ticket.

Sheep scare easily. Just wait till one of these falls out of the sky with people onboard. That will be the end of that. At least for a few more decades.

Re: The end of the pilot prefession
This will never happen.
As long as there is life to preserve on board an aircraft, it will be controlled by a pilot.
UAVs operate only in certain conditions, are expendable, don't have any personnel on board, and reduce the risk to personnel by keeping them out of a combat area.
Even though the technology exists to make a pilotless airliner, the cost savings will be negligible, and the safety factor will be reduced. Can you imagine a perfectly flyable airliner crashing because it ran out of the data-link range and no passenger could land it?
Maybe single crew, but never none...

Never? Realllllllly. I think it's time people wake up to the reality here. Piloting as we know it is going the way of the Dodo, make no mistake.

Make that RPV. There is still someone flying the thing in a container somewhere.reality check wrote: We're killing people a world away with drones, it's already here.

I assumed we all knew that - as referenced by the "a world away" part. As in a world away from the stressed out "pilot" in the container outside Vegas.AuxBatOn wrote:Make that RPV. A Drone, by definition, is Unmanned and not remotely controlled (ie: autonomous).reality check wrote:I assumed we all knew that - as referenced by the "a world away" part. Re: The end of the pilot profession
my grandad was a navigator.
2 pilots, 4 engines, 1 navigator, 1 engineer.
today, 2 pilots 2 engines, 0 navigator, 0 engineer.
ya see a trend here?

Well regardless of my speedy, mistyped characters I like the answers that are being selected!
Re: The end of the pilot profession
Just for the fun of it, I'll poll the F/As I work with to see if they would work on a pilotless plane and I'll report back later...
My guess is none would, but what do I know, I'm only the Captain...

Re: The end of the pilot profession
I had a conversation last year with a very senior pilot union rep who spends most of his time working with the FAA and several aircraft manufacturers on the effects of dealing with pilotless aircraft, and what it will mean to the union membership.
He told me there are 4 large jests flying in US airspace on full automation from engine start to stop right now, with more to follow as the study progresses.
He says it is by far the hottest issue he's seen in his career.
