Provincial Airline, St-John

Post by Popol »

HI,
I am about to graduate from l' ENA (avionics) in St-Hubert and I got a phone interview on Monday with PROVAIR in St-John. I was wondering if some one here already worked for them. I want to know a few things about the company:

-What salary should I expect considering I have worked as an avionics apprentice for a bit more than a year?

-How is the work environnement?

-Is it a reliable company, will they lay me off after 3 months because of the lack of work?

-How many aircraft they operate? (couldn't find on the website but I know type)

-Also tell me anything you think I should know about the company.

Thank You

they go from DHC-2 to DHC-8, +the saab 340 and KAs
According to the canadian register, they have about 25 airplanes.

Don't know about salaries, but don't expect the cost of living to be that high in st-john NF either.

Some others might not agree with what I am about to tell you, but considering you are a recent graduate, you should be looking a getting real hands-on experience ASAP; it might be worth getting a smaller pay these days, considering times are not exactly the best for AMEs right now. As soon as business will pick up, you will notice that good avionics are hard to find and you will get a decent living if you make a good name for yourself.

This Provincial Airlines gig might indeed be worth a shot for you.
GO in there, get the experience, get your logbook signed.
Then you have the option of either staying there (you might like the place\ NF lifestyle) or move on with something solid on your resume.

IMHO

Follow the above advice, but make sure you get on with the airline side and not with the division that does the mods as you will get stuck running wires for months on ends.
take care

Worked there for a little bit, not too bad. Wages are negotiable, trust me. I suggest you get in there get some installation experience ,learn the standard practices, and get some troubleshooting experience when you screw up. You'll get your logbook filled out as you are doing the installations. You don't have to stay there but you'll take away some valuable experience. Then go on to line maintenance. Your resume will look far more attractive with the installation experience. Just my opinion, good luck!
Cheers!

I'm in the mod division now and there is PLENTY of work there, with more on the way.

My logbook is getting filled quite fast and I still have another 2.5 years before I can write my CARS exam.

It's probably one of the best places to get your hands on experience dealing with harness making, soldering, bench work, installation and really seeing the guts of an airplane, then having to put it all together.

If there was a time to go there, now is the time to do it.

As far as attitudes go, it's a mixed bag. Some people love it there, others are miserable, but you find that in any place of work. I will say that it is a strict place of work (IE: There is no downtime, 8 hours work means 8 HOURS WORK), but then again doing mods there is ALWAYS something to do.

A benefit though is that it is Monday to Friday, with shifts alternating weekly between 8am to 4:30pm to 4pm to 12:30am. Your weekends are your own, though there is usually overtime available after hours or on weekends if you want it (depending on how close to a deadline we are).

The HR department are awesome! I have had personal dealings with them and have nothing but outstanding things to say about them. They continue to refine and develop employee benefits, including workers compensation support and just recently have added an EAP program.

To top it all off, you'll be laying your hands on avionics equipment that you will most likely never get to touch in most situations unless you join the military. I won't go into details, but some of the experience is quite specialized.

Salaries are ok. You definately won't starve or anything, but we still can't keep people from moving over to Cougar Helicopters (their pay scales are AWESOME!)

It's probably one of the best spots to be as an Avionics Apprentice. There is no such thing as Lazionics at PAMS Inc. No sir!

This would not be my first job, I have worked for a bit more than a year while going at school(Air Inuit and Exeltech).
My logbook is half filled and I will be able to get my liscence in like 1.5 year.
Right now I'm not sure I want to get out Quebec to work at a mod center. I rly liked the job at Exeltech because I touched to pretty much everything and troubleshooting was not just about some one that screwed up while running wires.

Try applying at Porter Airlines. I take it with Air Inuit/ Excel Tech. You have Dash-8 experience. They are getting more aircraft in a few months so they are hiring. Based in Toronto though...

Just sent out a resume last week to PAL. Hoping to hear something. Any hiring going on out in the east coast, especially PAL?
