Low time pilot pool

Post by Ville »

Howdy all,
Looking to see if you guys know of companies that have low time pilot pools? I know Central Mountain air has it, but are there others? Doesn't matter where in Canada either.
Cheers

Cool! Does it have that stuff in it that turns the water green if you pee in it? I don't want you low-time pilots in MY pool.

Low time pool is a program where pilots who have low time (250h for example) work their way up to getting a shot at being on the right seat of an aircraft. I guess not many operators do it then?

South of the border is the only place you will find these "pools". Companies like Bearskin etc etc all have "hiring pools" that they create when they interview 25 people and want to keep 10 of them for future needs. Thats the only pools I know of in Canada.

Ok, I guess they are called hiring pools here. Just to make it clear we are talking about the same thing though... Is it the case that in these hiring pools guys get their CPL and Multi IFR with IATRA, then work on the ramp while waiting for their name to come up (based on seniority I guess). Then when they get their chance to try for the right seat, they can either make it or fail, and if they make it they move from ramp to FO?
No one in my family has ever been into aviation, so I have no short cuts. All I'm trying to do is learn how things work in the industry. If there are other ways people get started on the ramp and move up, by all means, educate me.

Hiring Pools, are a fancy name for ramp labour, e.g.: You get your ATR Multi/IFR ( $50,000+ or so ) then as hardly anbody will give you a job without Flying Experience, you ask for a ramp labour job in hopes that they will like you and advance you into the flight line at an entry level position. Most operators do that ( Because for $1500 to $2000/Mth they get very well educated, cheap efficient labour. Supply and demand. ). Problem is, as seen with, "Ice Pilots" some operators treat their employees as expendable. Rampies, being at the bottom of the Totem Pole, are viewed as more expendable than anyone with whom they have money or time invested. Some people don't want to do it unless they know something about the Operator - as there are unscrupulous ones out there. Sometimes by the time the incubent jumps through all of their hoops, he/she is too burned out to fly. All for the almighty buck.

I'm thinking maybe Buffalo Airways if I understand what you mean. Start on the ramp work your way to a seat. Looks like Keewatin Air do it as well.

Hey JMACK, sorry to diverge from the topic, but what is that Buffalo in your avatar picture doing? Shooting rockets?

Nakina Air Service is one place that hires young pilots and put them right seat on either a PC-12 or a DHC-6. Some people go running from there though.
