What Do You Eat

Post by wilton »

Hey everyone

just wondering what you guys/girls take to eat for meals on a 3 or 4 day pairing. I have usually gone out to eat however it gets really expensive. Just looking for some "on the road" meal ideas to save some coin.

Hit Costco and pick up a large box of Fruitsource bars, the ones with vegetable servings. And some protein bars. Not only does eating in restaurants cost alot, it is hell on the waistline.

Tacos. If you're really hungry, a tossed salad will usually do the trick.

In all seriousness, granola bars and almonds to get me through the day and keep me eating at a constant pace. It's fascinating how 6 or 7 almonds can quench that timmy's urge.

A chicken/steak salad for dinner is always a good choice and available almost anywhere. I prefer aged vinegar so I bring my own. It tastes a lot better than the usual house dressing and is many more times healthier.

Obviously stay away from appetizers. But beer is what does me in. I prefer Guinness or a strong Euro beer (NOT heineken). Holsten etc... But not the $2 Rolling Rock / Coors Light / Bud specials. They turn me inside out.

Watch the amount of coffee's or tea's you order. Try and have them without sugar milk or creame.

You can pack sandwiches for lunch .. a cold pack will keep them fresh for 3-4 day pairings (assuming your hotel has a fridge to refreeze the pack). Yogurt, granola bars, and if you have access to hot water in the morning .. Quaker minute oatmeal packs are a good day starter.

All hearty veggies and fruit (apple, orange) are good on the road .. banana's are good for the first 2 days .. but after that they start to look pretty beat up.

Cheers!

Food advice to all pilots:

NEVER pass up the opportunity to eat.

NEVER pass up the opportunity to sleep.

NEVER pass up a toilet. Or a tree.

I ate a bun/salad off a discarded room service tray at 1am after a 16 hour duty day. It appeared wrapped, the butter was half-opened. Game on.

I make soups, chili, casseroles and freeze them into containers. (glass ones with a sealed lid).
Microwave, coffee pot, campfire or running under hot water in a pinch and its warmed up ready to serve!

Why was this thread moved? Nourishment while on flight duty is a pretty important subject. At least as important as CREW REST, which I notice seems to have more relevance to aviation than nutrition???? It's Okay to starve...but do get your beauty sleep?? I guess some mod would disagree? Love to hear it.

What he said. If your blood sugar drops because you end up having a long day, with no chance to stop, well.... nobody is driving the bus. It's NOT a safe situation when you're half out to lunch (no pun intended).

I stuff nuts (pine nuts and almonds and cashews) in ziploc bags under the front seat -- that has gotten us through some long days. Some granola-type bars hold up well even in the heat. If you want to find food in every crevice in the airplane, try a salad for fun....

Back in my days of railroad conducting, I found that Michelina's frozen dishes are good to bring, Especially when they go on sale for a dollar, i would by a ton of them and just leave them in the freezer, pack a few on an overnighter/overnighters. Also a good idea is to buy bagged salads, bring some dressing in a tupperware container, and when ready to eat, mix it in with the salad. DONT mix it before hand, it will get soggy and not very good, but im sure you knew that already :)
