Lufthansa A346 missed approach YVR...
anybody know what happened there? They were on approach for 26R and went around for 26L... Good Job as it must be mentally fatiguing to have to redo an approach after a 10 hour flight.
Re: Lufthansa A346 missed approach YVR...
maybe they were cleared for 26L in the first place???

Re: Lufthansa A346 missed approach YVR...
There was some nasty wind shear at yvr today. The north runway had completely different winds compared to the south runway. That would be my guess on the go around for the other runway.

In my airlines' operations manual it is stated that a "Go-around is considered to be a normal manuever."
Lets not try to sensationalize it too much. The toughest part is remembering to call "gear up" after calling "Go around- flaps"

Sitting in there for 10 hours and then having to go around isn't exactly as fascinating. Sure it's part of the job, but I just think it's a job well done. Typically the fatigue level from a human factors onset is quite high at this stage. So I don't see what the problem is to give the crew praise for a job well done.
Don't ruin it for me, you're bad mouthing my hero's

Sitting and napping. Given that its Lufthansa and under JAR-OPS, they probably have at least one relief pilot with sleep facilities. At my company I rather do the 9+ hour flight than a 7 hour flight because of this; 3 hours of good quality sleep are fantastic and I typically "hit the ground running" at my layover destination.
Besides, Airbus and Boeing have greatly simplifed the flight operations of an aircraft. That is why modern-generation transports have a lower accident rate than say, DC-8's or 707, despite similar appearances externally. The systems and SOPs are more complex than, say, a Navajo or a light turboprop but the flying of it is much easier. Coming from the Airbus, God help me if I ever were to be plonked into a Navajo to do a NDB or VOR approach, followed by a missed.

Re: Lufthansa A346 missed approach YVR...
We were on approach right after them. According to the approach controller they overshot due to windshear on 26R and asked for the longer runway for their second approach. We asked for 26L as well, and as advertised at 200' we had about a 15 knot tailwind, and the surface winds were from the west gusting to 25 knots.
Re: Lufthansa A346 missed approach YVR...
Pilot's decision is final... In this case, he just made a routine decision to overshoot because he didn't feel safe landing... nothing more and certainly nothing less.Stan_Cooper wrote:We were on approach right after them. Give me a mile of highway and I'll show you a mile; give me a mile of runway, and I'll show you the world!
