June eqpt bid - no hiring.
The title says it all. Wish it was better news. Sounds like more metal is still just a pipe dream, and mgmt is expecting us to gobble up the unassigned flying through makeup/drafting, so no hiring for now. IMHO, we're running pretty thin as far as staffing levels go.. maybe they're waiting to get negots out of the way before starting into another round of hiring?
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
Out of curiosity, is there an incentive to pick up the unassigned flying be it monetary, extra days off, etc? At the two airlines I've worked for, one gave you nothing in return and the other paid quite handsomely for your help. Just trying to get a feel of what it's like over at big red. No problem if the information is a little sensitive to post on here.
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
The only financial benefit to the pilots is when they are drafted for open flying. Generally speaking, there is enough of a reserve pool and $$ chasers (make-up with no incentive) that drafting is a rare occasion. Just another way that pilots screw themselves out of potentially more money and keeps the need for hiring at bay.

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
Had a permanent management training type in the JS yesterday and he says that they have been instructed to have an updated PIT course (intro course for new hires) ready for September.
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
I heard the same today - gearing up for September ground school. I hope it's true!
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
Not a chance it's for new hires, it's for reintegrating the 150+ Age 60 Complainants. If they've been gone for more than 24 months they would require Operations and Aircraft re-qualification programs including a full or modified ground school depending on the length of absence.
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
Please don't turn this into another flypast60 debate...go to PPRUNE, you'll get your fill. The potential PIT course for September (if it happens) will be for new hires.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
I agree with RAM. Pilots were away on LOA s longer and no PIT course.
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
So, new hires for September, when will they start the interview process? As of this time there isn't even a posting for pilots. AC is famous for long waiting periods between interview -->hiring. So maybe interviews in September, and GS's in Oct. or Nov?
Is there a hiring pool of preselected candidates from pre 2008? How many of them have gone to WS as a result of the delay?
I heard that AC has only 2900 pilots right now, and had 3300 in 2008, is that true?
Thanks,
AC wannabe.

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
actually I think the number has shrunk to 2700..... Wj is only getting bigger, where as AC is shrinking. Sounds really promising to me.

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
To answer the hiring pool question. Those of us with competitive candidate letters were told that, in the past, that group gets reviewed first while the interviewing gets going. There is a follow up interview to make sure you hadn't done anything stupid in the few years that lapsed.
Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
Possibly a stupid question, but I'd really rather not miss out on the opportunity to apply - should the job posting appear on the 'Careers' section of the website or would they use another website?
Cheers

No other website. Fill out and maintain a profile on the careers section of www.aircanada.com
Good luck!
Scope. Not just a mouthwash.

Thanks for the info!
Do AC operate a similar system as WestJet where an internal Pilot referral goes a long way in improving the strength of your application?

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
As much as I wish there was hiring in the forcast at AC, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Running a Sept G/S for new hires would require another equipment bid which would show a need to hire. Since we just had one, I doubt that there is another one in the pipeline for the next few weeks.

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
I hate to say it but personally I don't see hiring this fall. I was told no hiring in 2010. With the DMM's at 85hrs for August I think we will see some hiring soon. Winter/Spring 2011 seems more likely! Although I could be wrong......

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
I agree...The company now has the ability to run a bid 4 times a year and from what I understand they will likely post 10-03 sometime in early September.
It's more likely to see hiring in late 2010 or early 2011...provided the bid shows a vacancy!

Re: June eqpt bid - no hiring.
It used to be internal connections went a long way.
I know many guys hired at 24, their fathers were all senior AC Captains. Those guys pulled some serious strings from the inside.
Now the pendulum has swung the other way. From what I understand, candidates are evaluated in the database via their CV and qualifications, and other variables. A pinch of luck involved, but there are thousands of qualified guys on file. Sometimes its your day to get pulled, sometimes its not. But all those who make it truly earn it. I've gotten sick of those who have no appreciation of how hard it truly is to earn a pilot slot with AC.

I am the only pilot in my family so no one helped me to get in....it was persistance and hard work.Out of the hundreds of guys I know at AC I can't think of more than a couple that had dads here.
The hiring process has been extremely neutral for at least a couple decades....before that I have no clue.
I even know of two captains who have sons that interviewed and were refused....and one of them is a manager.(and a good one at that.)

Both you blokes raised good points in my humble opinion..... I was lucky years ago to get into Transport Canada Aviation with a strictly civilian background as TC usually got pilots at the Inspector level from the military as DND pilots were well trained/educated. I had nobody inside that I knew so it was just a matter of studying the regs/rules, paying particular attention to the position statement of qualifications(SOQ). I didn't come first in the external competition but managed to qualify on an eligibility list(3rd place) out of 18 interviewed and was offered a position 4 months after the interview.
I am nothing special(as you all know) just an ordinary civvy who drove little airplanes.... if I can apply myself and make it, anybody can.
