Anyone care to share a little info on how some aircraft got there nicknames? Curiuous about pigboat and turbo swine. Thanks

"Pigboat" is a common handle for the Canso (PBY-5A family) Probably coined because the old girl often acts a bit like a submarine in the wrong hands.
Ask me how I know.

Turbo Otter = swine

Piston otter = stoneboat

Twin otter = twotter, two headed float rodent etc etc

Cessnas = spamcan, buck eighty five, dollar eighty etc etc

Havn't heard a Cessna called a "spamcan" in a while. That just made my day, and made miss working on floats some more.

Beaver= Rodent
Cessna 206= 2 by 6

The 206 on floats garners a lot of scowl... like 2 oh sucks... two slow six , crowd killer etc

Heard that when they were building it the pilots would say,
"this thing can't fly" and the engineers would say it can so.

I always thought the whistling tit was kinda apt for the HP Argosy.

siddley were you refering to the Argosys that Transair had? I flew with that a/c in the arctic out of resolute bay, as a grunt. Roscoe was one of the enginers on it, on one of my tours for a whooping 350.00 @month. I can not remember who the other engineers or pilots were. Had fun though.

A "stoneboat" is a crude wooden sled used to drag heavy stuff around on. I imagine the Single Otter was called the same thing for a similar reason. I don't know why the Turbo Otter is called a "swine" other than "turbine" rhymes with "swine", sort of. It's still a "stoneboat" to me.

Actually, the door on the 207 is pretty sweet because it is behind the flaps, plus you have a full-size R/H passenger door.

Yeah sammy, those were the ones. They were down here during the summer of 1969 for the Churchill Falls airlift.

Sailors would turn and run if they heard what I call the P-40 on occasion! Usually when I'm stuffed in the tail sitting on the batteries.

I remember seeing Billy Heatherington in Resolute as a pilot on the Argosy in the early 70"s.
Didn't know the other fellas.

I liked what the AC cargo guys called the DC8... a greasy eight.. and then a bunch of the particular machines had nicknames..

Sorry guys, the first Midwest/TransAir Argosy didn't arrive in Canada until April 1970, Of the four that were left from BEA's fleet, only two operated in Canada. The other two were registered, but were kept "in bond" until they left the country for New Zealand and Australia in 1976 or thereabouts. (with short side trips to Ireland and Luxembourg on leases) Only one remains, more or less intact in NZ formerly TAJ. Two were reduced to scrap in Australia, and I can't recall where the fourth fetched up.
BTW "Whistling Tit" refered to the RAF versions with the very prominent radome, "Screaming Wheelbarrow" or "That F*^&^%$#g pile of S%%#$t" were often applied.
Best comment by flight services out of YRB; "Caution, possible departing Argosy ahead of the cloud of smoke"
